Some questions...

1. If you go to sounds and multimedia in the control panel, is there a little check mark in Plack volume icon in the Taskbar? Is it greyed out, or can you check it?

2. Do you hear any startup sounds?

3. Also in sounds and multimedia>>audio tab... what is your prefered device set to?

4. If you go to device manager (control panel>>system>>device manager tab) do you have anything listed as an unknown or other device?

5. What kind of sound card?

6. By reinstall, do you mean format/reinstall or just an over the top installation?

For the answer to #1... did you check the little box for volume control in the taskbar... or can you not check it at all (greyed out)?

For the answer to #3... If you use the drop down menu, what other choices do you have?

I had a similar problem, and found that Analog sounds were the default selection, but system is configured for Digital. Changing the sound configuration to Digital in the Sond card Control Panel fixed it. There is somewhere that a selection is made to configure Digital sounds, but I forgot where it is. LOL Since Digital is what I use, I only need to remember to reset the Sound Control Panel, mine is called Santa Cruz and can be found in Settings / control Panel.
Good luck

Sorry for all the questions... working blind here ya know...

Can you please describe: "If I check it, it MUTES it." a little better.

MUTES what?

Do you get the speaker icon in the taskbar if you check show icon checkbox?

If you do... can you double click on it and make sure nothing is muted?

I think Brant is on the right track. I had the same problem. double click System in control panel, hit Device Manager tab. Click the plus sign on sound, video, game comtrollers, highlight Creative Sound Blaster, hit the properties tab, hit settings tab. In the middle section is configuration. change the output mode to digital. Hope this does it for you.
