Subject: vmouse.vxd-mouse driver+resolution probs
Comment:

I am posting this for the second time:

My mouse does not work in normal mode, yet it works in Safe mode. In Device propertys/system/control panel there is a ! next to the mouse.I checked the porpertys for the mouse but it said vmouse.vxd could not load the drivers required for this device. I have replaced vmouse.vxd with the one on the windows cd but it still doesn't work,

I have also reinstalled twice, to no avail.

ALso the resolution stays at 680x480 (the lowest) and the colours stay at 16 colours. After trying to change it, it asks me to reboot, which I do, but then nothing changes, still 16 colours and the same resolution.

PLease help!

Have you upgraded your video card driver and your 4 in 1 chipset drivers? This problem is often linked to video adapters not working properly and sometimes even requires a BIOS update.

Download the latest driver from your card manufacturer.

Right click on My Computer, go to properties, device manager, expand the + beside display adapters (which means graphics cards), click on the driver listed, go to properties (bottom left), find the driver tab, click update driver, select specify the location of the driver, click on display a list of drivers in a specific location, click next, click have disk, and point Windows to the new drivers for your card and let it update. Reboot and see how it is.

Also download the latest VIA 4 in 1 chipset drivers from here
http://www.viatech.com/jsp/en/dr/driver.jsp or, if you have an Intel chipset, download an updated ATA storage driver from http://support.intel.com/support/chipsets/driver.htm

To find out which you have, go back to device manager and expand the + beside "system devices", scroll down and if there is a whole load of VIA stuff at the bottom then that's what you have.

If none of these work you may need to remove the existing video card drivers before repeating the updates.

If the mouse is still not working do the same for the mouse drivers and also extract a new copy of vmouse.vxd

start, run, type "msconfig" go to extract file button on the general tab, navigate to C:\Windows\Options\Install and find the win 20 cab (or it will be on your ME CD if the cabs are not on your PC), then extract it to your system directory to replace the one there, thus making sure it is not corrupted. Another alternative is to go to the MS site and download the latest version from there.

Go to START - RUN, and type "msconfig"

In the window that opens, click on the Static VXDs tab.

What is in that list? Which are checked and which are unchecked?

this is the EXACT SAME problem that I am having... Just one day it started doing this. Same resolution problem, same mouse problem, even though it works in safe mode.

I can usually fix my computer problems but this one I cant.

Yesterday I had the some problem.
Regarding to the screen resolution I solved this uninstalling the monitor and the video card.
After rebooting my win98 P&P found the right driver. I suggest, if resolution remain low, to uninstall video card driver (better if deleted) and reinstall windows.
Regarding to mouse trouble I'll see today.

This happened to me completely at random this morning. It seems that a reinstall will not fix the problem, and windows is unable to find vmouse.vxd on the win98 cd that I have. Once I had reinstalled windows, it had removed the display adapter drivers. doing a search for new hardware I was able to detect a mouse which did seem to work, and was then able to reinstall the display drivers. I am now, some 4 hours after discovering the problem, back in full resolution and colour, but with a working mouse which claims not to be able to load the drivers because of the vmouse.vxd file still being missing. I stumbled across this page looking for a place I might be able to download one, in the hope that this will fix the problem. Will post again if I find one.

According to the other comments here, this seems like a display related problem, but my suspicions lie with a funky new Kensington Optical mouse that I installed yesterday. It was working fine last night, and then not at all this morning. I have reverted to an old serial mouse for the time being, until I've figured out what's going on.

I hope these comments are of some use to people.

Regards

Richard

vmouse.vxd, and other *.vxd files are located in win98_48(/49/50/51).cab in win98 for w98 users, on the install cd. Check out:

Finally! yesterday I was able to fix the mouse trouble.
Even if I downloaded vmouse driver from win98 cabs, the mouse didn't work.
So, I made an overview to a systen.ini file and I found it corrupted.
Then I deleted it and re-run the win98 install. After doing it, the system.ini was recreated and the mouse started to work well.
Let me know

Thank You Volf, I finally fixed my problem. I have been talking to techs and none of them could help me and all it was is the damn system.ini file had some weird crap in it. I just deleted all the crap, saved it and rebooted and now no error. If interested I followed the microsoft.com procedure here is the link:

Yes I am helping a businessman in our area with the exact same problem which first hit his computer on Monday - Mar 4, 2002.

First of all - thanks for the good hints on how to fix it.

Secondly - what is the common denominator here? Is it a virus - he had Norton's but has not done a Live Update since Dec - or is it only happening to certain CPU/motherboards? I know he is running WIN98E with a celeron chip and an INTEL motherboard.

I am curious as I have never seen this one before?

Hello everyone! I had the same problem last evening; I've just installed an ECS model p6bapa+ motherboard (VIA 693 chpset) and a Celeron 500; then I installed a totally fresh win98se (preceded by a fdisk, format procedure on the hdd); all was just fine (for about 3 hours of intesive "tests") until I "discovered" some VIA drivers which I installed; at the next boot 3 problems were noticed: my win98 insisted to request a user/pass; my video became 16 colours VGA; and, my (serial) mouse refused to work; in safe mode everything were ok;
So the common denominator seems to be win98se with celeron, but there are probably millions of such systems in the world, so it should be some more else; I suspected VIA chipset (drivers) but Rob Evans says he uses an Intel mb, so...
anyway, I try all the hints above tonite and I'll let you know what (if) works...
If someoane determines the exact cause, please tell us about...
have a nice week-end!
Adrian

As a follow-up to this thread, I recently read in another web site that the spyware program called ptsnoop.exe could be the cause of the annoyance described above? For more about this program, see: http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/ptsnoop.shtml

Yes the computer I worked on (see Response 12) did have this program running. Could anyone else concur that ptsnoop.exe is on the c: drive of a computer that has video and mouse problems?

I have exactly the same prob as described in response number 1 but my sound card has also packed up (although it's still recognised and reported OK in device manager) and a few things no longer work - like my TV viewing application. I also sometimes get errors in NPROTECT.EXE and Kernel32 and get a blue screen when i run the windows 98se installation CD. It's a bloody nightmare. Removing the video card from device manager and letting windows reinstall it seemed to do the trick for the display but the rest is still knackered. My PC is Athlon 800Mhz and chipset is Via. Norton AV didn't report any viruses.

video problem: remove the video adapter in the device manager and reboot.
mouse problem: type msconfig in the run window. Then select Normal under the first window called "startup selection" and reboot your computer.
on the computer I am working on it seems windows has unchecked all the settings dealing with system.ini in "msconfig" fixing that...send me on my way :)

See the following BELOW SCROLL DOWN

"Windows Cannot Load the File [vmouse.vxd]" Mouse Error Message Displayed by Device Manager (Q316544)

----------------------
The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

----------------------

SYMPTOMS
Your mouse may not work as expected. In Device Manager, there may be an exclamation point inside a yellow circle next to the mouse. If you view the properties of the mouse, you may see the following error message:

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the file [vmouse.vxd] that loads the drivers for the device [code 8.] To fix this problem, run Windows Setup again using your Windows CD-ROM.
Although you run Windows Setup as the message recommends, the problem is not resolved.

CAUSE
This problem can occur when the System.ini file on your computer is damaged.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, delete all incorrect or corrupted entries from the System.ini file on your computer. To edit the System.ini file, follow these steps:

Click Start , and then click Run .

In the Open dialog box, type c:\windows\system.ini , and then click OK .

In Microsoft Notepad , notice that the System.ini file is divided into sections. Each section begins with a section heading that is contained within square brackets. An example of a System.ini file is shown here:

[drivers]
wave=mmdrv.dll
timer=timer.drv
[mci]
[driver32]
[386enh]
woafont=dosapp.FON
EGA80WOA.FON=EGA80WOA.FON
Examine the area above each section heading for illegible ("garbage") text. If any illegible text precedes any of the section headings, delete the illegible text.

After you delete all illegible text as instructed in step 4, click Save on the File menu.

Quit Notepad , and then restart your computer.

Had same problem with corrupt system.ini and mouse.vxd not loading. Initially deleted system.ini and reinstalled windows and fixed it temporarily. Then it came back -- i got real suspicious of a virus at this point. Changed virus scanning options to "all files" instead of program files only and found one (W32/hybrid). Then deleted system.ini and reinstalled windows again and it worked beautifully.

Add me to the list. Additionally, my CD is "missing." Can anyone advise on the CD? Here's my sad story. Mouse worked erratically, taking time outs every second or so; uninstalled mouse on the Device Manager panel so that I could install driver, again; now system locks, reporting missing msmouse.vxd; system boots only in safe mode (16 color and low resolution, of course); additionally, CD player is not recognized in safe mode. Is the CD glitch because Windows Safe doesn't load drivers? All symptoms started after adding new video card (Diamond Speedstar 8MB swapped from another in-home system) and another 128MB memory module. I uninstalled the video card driver, but on trying to reinstall it, noted that the CD is not seen (all connections verfied and unit has power. Memory recognized OK. Thanks. Dave

to answer the CD question....YES, in safe mode the computer will not recognize the CD drivers. But I'm also with most of these people.

I'm running WinME and the other day my I experienced these 4 problems.
1) Mouse quit working
2) Display at 600
3) Sound drivers not working
4) Get prompted for password at startup

I've fixed the mouse problem by deleting giberish out of system.ini (thanks for that fix.. it Sucked without the mouse)

When I goto Device Manager, I don't have a Display Adaptor even listed so that I can delete it. I did uninstall/reinstall the Muse Sound Card drivers, but that didn't help the sound problem at all.

If anybody else has fixed any other problems, I'd love to hear it. As for me, if I get any other problems fixed, I'll write a detailed explanation of how to do it.

It is a P3 processor with Intel's D815EEA motherboard, running Windows ME with ATI graphics. I don't know what is causing this, but it would be interesting to find out.... My guess is a program such as Gator companion or something else bogus. Thank you for your help, and I am willing to help anyone who needs it.

I had the mouse, video, audio, and DirectX problems on Windows 98.
I deleted giberish in system.ini, selected normal mode in msconfig, extracted mouse.vxd from win98_48.cab on the Windows 98 CD into windows/system and system/vmm32, deleted hardware entries for video, audio, and mouse, and restarted. I also reinstalled DirectX.
Now, the mouse works, resolution and colors work, and DirectX works, but still no audio.
The above may help some, but I would also like to know how anyone fixed the audio problem.

I had the same problem: mouse not working (couldn't load vmouse.vxd) and low resolution/color display (and when you change the resolution and/or color, it asks you to reboot, but when you do, the changes don't take effect).

I don't know if this'll work for everyone, but it worked for me:

In your c:\Windows\System folder, there's a SYSTEM.INI file, which might be messed up. In the same folder, there's also a SYSTEM.BAK file. Just make a copy of the SYSTEM.BAK file, and rename it to SYSTEM.INI (overwriting the original SYSTEM.INI file), then reboot, and everything should be fine!

If there's no SYSTEM.BAK file, there might be a SYSTEM.000 file, or something like that. Copying THAT file and renaming it to SYSTEM.INI might also work.

After your stuff's working again, you might have to change your resolution and color settings and stuff, but this time, you shouldn't have to reboot for the changes to take effect, and this time, the settings should actually change!

Good luck!
