My 2001 Dell Dimention 4100 suddenly froze and displayed all of the above corrupt or missing file messages upon reboot. My story is whizard72's story. I have tried all of the above fixes but to no avail. A DIR of c: is jibberish and I can in no way access any files or directories (such as windows) -- hence I can make no changes or progress. My small d: drive which I use for backup of Quicken etc files is fine.

Question: can I recover some critical files from the c: drive SOMEHOW SOMEWAY?? If I were to install Windows XP to my small d: drive and move the jumpers to make it the master and the troubled c: the slave, could I possibly/likely be able to access those critical files on c: ??

Appreciate your collective help.

swani, the change from 1 master to another should do the trick, UNLESS you have a damaged drive. Then, all bets are off and professional help may be your only hope. Seeing gibberish doesn't make me optomistic. Be careful not to have more than one OS on a disk at a time. They don't play well together.

When you've got it all sorted take a copy of file vmm32.vxd (on floppy if you have one) and it might get you out of trouble if this should happen again.
