VMM32.vxd errors

Hi,
I have had several problems with VMM32.vxd. I earlier had Windows 98 and now have ME. In both cases my PC used to start throwing errors for missing VMM32.vxd and would refuse to boot. However it would boot on restarting the machine. This pattern would repeat a number of times and then the ssytem would crash. I have then reinstalled Windows and contd. This process has repeated a number of times and seems to be starting again. Does anyone have any idea as to why this could be happening? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Summary: Runs fine with 256mb Ram. When I try to install allowed total of 512, gives error message that vmm32.vxd is missing or corrupted. Tried Safe Mode, & it says it doesn't have enough extended memory. ...
Summary: My dad installed additional memory on his HP 4550Z, and since then cannot start Windows. The original error was something about vmm32.vxd corrupted or missing file... he can't even start in safe mode....
