My Step-father believes that he has a virus on his computer, and he had no anti-virus software on it at the time of the infection. If he installs some antivirus software now, asuming that the virus is already installed and running, will the anti-virus software catch it? Or does he need to pull off what he needs and reformat?

What type of anti-virus software does he want to install? Installation may not even work if he indeed already has a virus.
Have him try an Online scanner like AVG or Housecall. Then, he can install a good anti-virus program after he verifies that his system is clean.

www.grisoft.com have a good free AV prog. First you need to see if you are clean. Since some virii are detected by the changes they make, you may find it difficult to proove 100% that you are free of these menaces.... Online scan.....
