I allow Windows to manage my Virtual Memory Settings.I am trying to summon up the nerve to set a static setting of 768 (3 x RAM) Is that a good idea ? Windows warns if I dare my system might not restart and programmes malfunction.Any views welcome

Notta good idea!
With 256memry you hardly need Swapfile if no
HEAVY LIFTING.
Make entry at bottom in WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI
& Swapfile'll likely be =0zero

mouse=*vmouse, msmouse.vxd
device=*dynapage

ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1

Onward to the APOCALYPSE!

Have a look at point 16 of the homepage link on this response. It's no big deal to change it but usually not necessary unless you're using big (and I mean big) video or graphics files.
