I have changed virtual memory settings numerous times, and when I do a systems info it always comes back as 2 GB. I have let windows set it and I have set it, always the same. Is 2 GB really the limit it can go to. I think this is my problem for loading raster images, I am hitting that 2 GB limit and not getting a warning about low virtual memory. It only tells me to increase the space on my C: drive.

Interesting, never noticed that line in System Information much. Never seen it change either. I think that is the limit that can be addressed. Back when Windows ME was designed by Microsoft, 128Mb memory and 10G drives were huge systems, and such memory was very expensive. So a big virtural memory (swap file) was the way to go.
However Windows ME can actually only address about 800Mb of virtual memory in a disk cache. This allows for AGP Aperture and other stuff they save there. Over that, things start to go wrong, as they could only allocate so many selector control blocks for it. This leaves only a little over 512Mb for memory pages. So if you have over 512Mb of memory, you have to put a line in the System.ini under:
[vcache]
MaxFileCache=524,288to keep from having stability problems. This way you get the correct warnings. All this is documented in several KB Q notes on the Microsoft web site. So if you are trying to process really large files in memory, you either have to up you physical ram which can be over 512 if you have the system.ini line or switch to XP which can use a larger Cache.

I have 512 mb RAM with a 30 GB hard drive. Thanks for the information on virtual memory limits. I think I will upgrade to Windows 2000 as I am running Autocad.
