When I had 256 MB of Ram I had my Virtual Memory set to 400 for both the minimum and maximum. Now that I have 512 MB Ram do I need to change this setting and if so, what should it now be.
Cheers.
Si

Yes, remove all VM settings and just let windows manage it. (at 512, odds are very good that you will not use the swapfile at all)
Even at 256MBS, the 400MBs was (most likely) excessive. And you never want to specify a MAX.What apps are you running that need 512MBs?

I went thru a faze of messing with the VM settings , I currently have 256MB SDRAM. I recieved differant opinions as to what I should make these settings . Iam sure alot depends on what kind of applications you are running , and every situation is differant ! With that said , I ended up going with the advise to just let windows control it. Everytime I changed these settings , I never had any noticable change in the performance of my system.Good Luck !

hello
i tryed like nic and never realized any grate improvement for hassel involved.
i herby call motion and consider it passed lol
have a grate day

Not trying to be different but I do have to specify min and max settings, so I will offer my two cents worth to the original question "what should the settings be if specifying them yourself..."
Basically the need to set swapfile size was based on the need to stop excessive hard disk accessing ("thrashing") in older machines that didn't have much RAM. The equation was that the min and max file sizes would prevent Windows from growing and shrinking the file all the time - therefore stopping continual disk thrashing. The actual amount suggested at the time by Microsoft Technet was two and a half times your physical RAM amount - so 32Mb of RAM would require an 80Mb swapfile min and max.
Has to be said though, the guys above are right - modern pc's with 512Mb RAM do not require hardly any use of the swapfile and setting the size to 1280Mb would be a waste of disk space.
If you do insist on doing this - make sure you create the swapfile on a hard drive other than the one Windows resides on - this works so much better if this is the only solution to swapfile issues.
Hope this helps,
Mark

SWAPFILES ???
I use a PAGEFILE instead of a SWAPFILE.
SWAPFILES are becoming obsolete.
In any case you should have at least one or the other.

I have the same question as the original concern. I now have a P4 with 512MB SDRAM and would like to know how to let windows automatically set the Virtual Mem size. THe only way I know to access Performance options is through Properties. I can't seem to find a way to let windows set the Virt Memory.
My only use for the computer is Video Editing and music recording. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks
Graham
