If you have only 48MB RAM, why not by a little more, it's very cheap lately.
I don't think that it will help much managing your swapspace with that little RAM.

yuyo... with your system specs you can run windows ME.... but for to enjoy windows ME
-your processor is too slow
-you dont have enough memory
-you dont have enough hard drive space
any effects of tweeking virtual memory will be only marginal

For systems with smaller amounts of RAM, the rule of thumb is 2.5 times as much swap file as RAM. Limiting the Max and Min to say 150 MB or 120 MB (48 * 2.5 = 120 ) would probably be enough. If you have any trouble you can go back and set it higher or click the "let windows manage..." button to undo the setting. The benefit of managing your own swap file is that the CPU won't have to calculate the size, it will already know it. Also, once you have defraged, windows will know right where to find the swap files. It will set aside the virtual file space as a unit instead of having to search all over the HD for virtual memory files. You won't get the benefit of windows having to use all of your RAM first before going to the swap file because it is probably already doing that. Actually the benefits you will gain will be increased by the fact that they are saving work for a slower CPU and slower HD. By the way, do you defragment on a regular basis? This alone can help your PC's performance. Hope this helps.

if the only problem is slowing down after 6 hours, i would rather reboot the computer every 6 hours then going through the hassle of changing the operating system ( i have to reboot my 600 mhz 192 meg ram notebook also about every 6 hours if multitasking..hehehe)
