Viking, can u help me pls..in an earlier posting of mine, you explained that you have made a floppy disk that is quicker to load delindex than booting with start up disk.
what do mean by `copy "c:\windows\command\ebd\command.com
and
c:\windows\command\ebd\Io.sysonto anew floppy..sorry if its a stupid question but i dont know how to copy it.
do i just copy and paste them sentences onto a floppy or something else.
thnx for your time
tony

I'm in the wrong..
Sorry about that. Should've waited for Viking.
Sorry,
did my right click index show you by the way?
Regards Col

tony, Viking gave you the path to the command.com and the Io.sys files. Just copy the 2 files along with delindex.bat on a blank floppy.

col, yes .the right click index was good.thnk you.
and where the 2 minutes are concerned, i know its very quick but if there is an even quicker way i`ll use it as i also "have the patience of a gnat". :-)
but i`m not that computer literate and dont get how to make the floppy.
thnx
tony

Running Delindex from a floppy is MUCH slower than having Delindex on the C:\ drive and running it from there, regardless of how fast you can boot up from a floppy.
The only way I can see that it is "better" to put it on a floppy is if you are using Delindex on MULTIPLE computers for a one time only tune-up. E.g., if you run a repair shop and people bring their computers to you, or you're a troubleshooter, and you go to fix the PC's of others.
If that's the case, then change the line that looks for DELYES! on C:\ as well as the View option which looks for Delindex on C:\.
So for a message addressed to Viking, we have responses from 2 Cols, a Len, and RM.

Lol - I obviously have and run Delindex.bat on and from c:\.
I am very impatient at times - my failing - I simply put, as Len said, command . com and Io.sys onto a floppy, rather than going through any of the other files on a boot disk when you boot.
I use this disk solely to get to the A:> prompt "marginally" quicker to run JUST Delindex. Some might not notice any difference, me, because of my impatient temperament, have noticed some time saving.
Try it yourself. If you don't think you get to the A:> any quicker than using a normal bootdisk or aren't as flawed in temperament as me :)), then skip it.
Be intersting to see if any do find it quicker though.
There must be something in the water where I live, as everyone I know who uses Delindex also uses the command.com and Io.sys disk.
LOL - what sad, impatient people we are ! :):)

I made a disk with only command.com and io.sys and it started windows the way it usually does, although in a different sequence and with a different splash screen. I never got to the a: prompt.
Either I'm doing something wrong, or it takes more than command.com and io.sys to make a disk that wil take you to the A: prompt.

Just for the heck of it-made the disk also- boot to a: prompt ok, change to c: and type delindex and get about 10 bad command or filename errors
booted with Me disk using above procedure and all works ok. Must be something im missing.
regards
Len

Just tried it(new floppy - same results.
Just done full format of new floppy, then put files on - it worked.

Right, I'm sat here with a box of new BASF DOS Formatted floppies. I've just put command . com and Io . sys from c:\windows\command\EBD onto 3 of said floppies and booted with each one.
Each one gave bad command / file name errors. Fair enough.
I then did a full format in windows of each floppy and then put the same files on and booted up.
More or less (give or take a few milliseconds) I arrived at the a:\ prompt (on each one). It says -Starting Windows Millenium Emergency Boot...
(C) Copyright Microsoft Corp. 1981 - 1999A:\ _ > Enter. Then see RM's name.
Why don't you ?? - I want to know :):)

It's taken a chunk of text out. It should read. -
A:\_ (blinking cursor) And I type c:\delindex.bat >> Enter. And see RM's name.

I just formatted a floppy in windows me and copied over io.sys and command.com.
Has to be the quickest way ive ever gotten to an A:\prompt. Thanks for the tip. I do carry delindex on a floppy for use on clients computers. Now im saving time with the quick a prompt access.
I also modified delindex so i could run it from the floppy. Now i have io.sys command.com and delindex.bat.
I restarted the computer. The a prompt quickly appeared i entered delindex.bat hit enter and chose M for more and im done.
I personally cant tell a speed difference with running it from A: or C:. The reason for this is that either way its over in a second or two.
This brings me to my next line of questioning.
Ive been running this app for a long time now. After, i always check to make sure its done its job and it has.
Am i experiencing quick speed because i run this frequently?
Does it run this fast for anyone else or am i missing something? Thanks

It's like poop off a shovel SMUOD:) !
Yes, it does run this fast if you use it regularly - I put it down to Delindex only having to clear out a couple of kbs at a time, if you use it every other day.
As for a:\ versus c:\ - On some machines it takes a dogs age to load from a floppy. Others like mine, the difference isn't a great deal, but I still run it from c:\ anyway.
However, one thing I did notice on 2 machines owned by the same person and bought at the same time, each been HAMMERED equally and NEVER been cleaned. Was, running Delindex from floppy on the first one took close to 30 minutes to shift 25+ meg of crap.
For the second machine, I thought sod this, and copied Delindex over onto the seconds c:\ and ran it. It took less than 10 minutes to shift the same amount of crap ! Real time difference there.
Glad you like the disk anyway SMUOD:) - the only reason I latched onto that was because I ran the ME DOS patch for 6 months, where you manipulate the start up files.

Tony S - open up windows explorer and insert a new floppy into your machine. On the left, Right click 3.5 floppy (A:\). Select Format from the drop down. In "format type" put a dot in FULL >> click Start.
When the disk is formatted, on the left again, open up c:\, then open up WINDOWS, then open up COMMAND the subfolder should say EBD. Click EBD.
On the right side you will see 26(?) files. Goto COMMAND ( .COM) and Right click it. Now choose Copy.
Now go over to the left side again and PASTE it onto 3.5 floppy (A:\).
Now go back over to the Right side and do EXACTLY the same for Io . sys
Your done !
Now reboot with the disk in and you will (should :)) see what is described in Response 12. ie.
at the a:\> prompt - type -
c:\delindex.bat
Away you go ! Hope you find the gain in speed marginally less painful than before.
:)))

Lol - got there in the end, eh ! - let us know how you go on and if the difference is useful to you or not. ;)

:-) just made the floppy..(thnx for the idiot proof instructions..they were just what i needed).
and i did get to the A prompt quicker ..
thnx again
tony

I needed idiot proof instructions also, and I found out why--besides the obvious.
IO.SYS on the C:\ drive is 110,080 bytes; IO.SYS in C:\Windows\Command\EBD is 116,676 bytes.
You guys want speed? Try this or some variation:
Make an autoexec.bat file on your new SuperFast boot disk and put this line in it:
C:\DELINDEX MORE
(Or if you're running it from a floppy, just put in DELINDEX MORE [or A:\DELINDEX MORE].) As soon as it boots up, it will instantly run DELINDEX. Badda bing!
Just in case you want to fiddle around now that you're in DOS, you might want to add other lines, like a path statement, a doskey statement, a dircmd statement, etc. This is what I put in mine:
@echo off
path=c:\windows;c:\windows\command;c;c:\bf;c:\util
SET DIRCMD=/P/O:GN/A
set temp=c:\
set tmp=c:\
doskey /insert /bufsize=2048
c:\delindex.bat more(I have batch files in C:\bf and utilities in C:\util.)
If anyone ever twiddles around in DOS, I think Vernon Buerg’s LIST is a must-have. See ME/7976

I guess Im a real idiot cause it still dosent work! Bah humbug, I dont care anymore. the old way works just fine for me:((

I wish i had acces to the guy who wrote windows :).
Thanks for the update Renaissance Man.
I knew if i held my breath long enough delindex would be running itself....

Len, don't give up. I was almost ready to throw in the towel.
Follow the instructions in post 16:
* Do a FULL format of the floppy.
* Copy io.sys and command.com from C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\EBD (must be from this directory!)After you do that, just make sure that the io.sys file size on A:\ is 116,676 bytes.

Renaissance Man
Tried again, made a .bat file like you described in response#20 and volia!
So call me an idiot(sheepish grin)
Thanks
Len

LOL Viking
I think we all wasted more time creating this bloody thing than we would ever hope to gain using it:)

Cleanup utilities:
Delindex Free-fast
Listzapper Free-fast
Empty recycle bin Free fastYour done.
Takes me a couple minutes to clean up now instead of a half hour clicking around explorer and the registry. Renaissance brought both of these to my HD.

I've thought a lot about tony soprano's just when i think i'v caught up..you go and move the goalposts :-). I like the wit, but I also think that it's profound, and an excellent summary of what Computing.net is all about.
Most of the stuff I post I have learned from or built upon the post of others. Thank you all! Maybe Computing.net's motto should be "Forever Moving the Goal Posts."
One other thought: this thread should be reposted under the Subject Line "Superfast Startup Disk." Anyone who might be interested might not necessarily look at "VIKING ..can u help".
It's easy to make such a post with a hyperlink to here. Is there a better way? I'd hate to see this little gem get tossed into the dustbin of history.

Whole heartedly agree with your sentiments RM, what a great motto that would be. And renaming the post to "SuperFast Start Disk" would be a cracking idea as it's purely descriptive and would make it very easy to find in peoples "My computing . net"
So ShutMeUpOrDown:) how about it ? Is it possible at all ??

If you started a thread titled "Superfast Startup Disk" people would see it while its on the first page.
Then others could post the link to it when someone asks about it.
The problem i see down the line with this method is advertising. People would stop seeing it and eventually not ask about it.
What you could do is write a howto and send it to Justin. He might put it with the others. Now it has a permanent place where it can be linked too and it has a better chance of being spotted by someone who missed this thread.
In your how to you might explain the pros and cons of the super fast disk.

any post that quotes me and the word "profound" in the same paragraph should be excluded from being deleted.
but seriously..not being too bright with `computer talk`, these posts go to prove that begginers like me can learn a great deal from others on here.
(oh, the shame of asking whether i had to copy and paste those sentences (original post) ) :-)
great stuff
tony

Believe me tony- Ive asker faaaaar, dare I say stupider questions! If we do not ask, how are we to learn?
Regards
Len
