What version of DirectX do you have installed. Also what games is this happening with. I had the same problem with a racing game , everytime it would go to the analizing my system ,my system would freeze up with a black screen . I have an ATI RADEON and have DirectX 8.0 installed. In my case it turned out to be a bug in the game. Other games like Quake III and NASCAR4 run fine. To check your system run the DirectX Diagnostic Utility. Go to Start ,Run type dxdiag and the DirectX utility will open , check your version and video and audio capabilities from there ! Good Luck, Nick
