I have a 700 mhz Athlon computer with 128mb of PC133 SDRAM and an 8mb ATI All-In-Wonder video card, running Windows ME. Whenever I try to load a game that requires a 3D accelerator, the game apparently does not register my 3D card, as I get washed-out black-and-white screens, or sometimes no truly visible graphics at all. When I run games like Half-Life that do not require 3D accelerators, they start in software mode, but once I manually switch to OpenGL, they work fine. My video card is a piece of crap, and I'm about to replace it, but it SHOULD WORK!!! Anyone know what is going on??

Driver issue perhaps. When did you start seeing a problem? If it was right after upgrading to Win ME(if you did upgrade) id start there.Go to
http://www.reactorcritical.com
for the latest driver and try that. Also try running dxdiag to see if that flags any problems.Click START>RUN>type"DXDIAG"(no quotes). Then run ALL the tests, even the sound ones and see what you get.
good luck

You probably need to go to the ATI website directly to get the correct driver. Windows ME has updated drivers, but they are usually Microsoft drivers that do not always function as well. If you have the video card integrated on your motherboard, you would be doing yourself a favor by getting the driver from the boards website because some of those drivers have been modified to run a certain way. Good luck.
