To Joel and Newgrl, I have a FIC 1st mainboard AZ11, Authentic AMD, Duron processor. Yes I am using onboard sound.
(How do I check to see if my VIA chipset drivers need to be updated? I went to this website but dont know which ones I need or how to find them. http://www.viatech.com/jsp/en/dr/driver.jsp)
if everything is working ok
you probably don't need to update them.
to check what version you have
right click my computer -choose properties-then click-
device manager tab-click the + next to system devices -highlight each one and click properties-then click driver tab -then click driver file details to see what version.
you can also check the other system components soundcard,video etc. and see what version you have. and compare that with what
is new on the fic-via driver website.
Important...
most often, when updating drivers you should try and get them from the fic or manufacturers website, for best compatiblity.
the ones installed by win-me are microsoft
certified drivers ,that were the most current
when win-me was released.

I disagree about getting them at FIC. Even FIC at the bottom of their driver page has a link to VIA... suggesting that you obtain the latest drivers from them.
FIC is 5 versions behind on the VIA drivers. I run an Asus A7V with the VIA KT133A chipset on it. I have found that every time I have updated the VIA drivers, then reinstalled my video card drivers, I have seen a noticible performance increase.

Scroll down to "Step Two".
Click on the link "4.33 drivers".
This will start the Via 4-in-1 download.
Choose Save this program to disk.
Save it someplace like your desktop so you can find it again.When it is finished, it will be in Zip format.
Unzip the files to their own folder.
I put mine in a folder called VIA on the root of c:.
Once they are unzipped, go to where you unzipped them and run the Setup.exe.You do not need to uninstall anything, just install. When finished, reboot. Then reinstall your video and sound card drivers. Obtain your onboard sound card drivers from FIC at the page mentioned above by bw. Or you can also obtain the sound chipset drivers from VIA once you assertain weather you are using the VIA 686A/B or the VIA VT8233 chipset.
