I have a Gigabyte GA-6VX7-4X motherboard with onboard VIA AC’97 audio. I have two ME partitions and one 98SE partition. Everything was fine with the sound then for some reason the sound died on the ME partitions but is working fine on the 98SE one. I’m not exactly sure when I lost the sound but I recently flashed the BIOS (went fine), added RAM, and tired to install a Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback joystick. The joystick will not work with the built-in game port, with is a known problem at Microsoft. According to Microsoft there is no fix except to add new game ports (bought Logitech joystick). Thanks again, Microsoft. None of this stuff affected the 98SE partition sound. Device manager shows everything is working properly with no conflicts and the sound is not muted. I am currently downloading the latest driver from Gigabyte and will try that. Any other thoughts before I add a sound card?

check your multimedia in the control panel see if everything is ok there.
you might check the device manager in safe-mode.
as far as your sound -video game controllers.more here
Hardware driver HelpSafe-mode will show if there is old junk registries left over.
Also you might check your bios settings for game sound and game controllers.
and if you ever get a game pad or joystick I suggest you get a USB one.
I'll never use a standard game port any more.
especially onboard there is alway movement in the controller.Good Luck
