using firefox with ME

Hewlett-packard / PAVILION

Specs: Windows ME, 633 MHz Intel\191Mb
Should I stop using firefox with ME? My friend says it is not meant to be used with an OS as old as ME. He thinks one should have XP or Vista to run it. He says the tabs use too much of my memory thereby slowing down my computer, that even the tabs I'm not viewing are still using up some of my memory. He says that if I use IE (version 6 is as high as I can go) which I also have but I don't use it that my computer will run faster. He also says that I shouldn't have two browsers because even if I'm not using the one it is still using up memory. I have a 75 Gb hard drive with 65 Gigs free yet so that is not a problem. Could you please give me your thoughts on the above? Thank you

Don’t worry, be happy!

I use Firefox and IE6 with Win ME, My computer may run a little slower but it is not endangering my life, threatening my relationships or ruining me financially. But seriously, before this character opened his mouth, did it worry you? If not go back to the top line. If it does go to #1

1. Make sure your computer is running as well as possible with routine maintenance. Use Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, Disk Defragmenter regularly. This costs nothing, and requires little technical knowledge.

2. Consider upgrading the RAM. Your owners manual should tell you what you have and how to install more. For $10AU, £4, $6US, I bought 512Mb of used RAM on Ebay. This made a noticeable difference. Just make sure you understand the instructions in your manual before attempting this.

3. Consider using the Restore CD’s which came with your computer to return your computer to the condition in which it left the factory. Read the owners manual about how to do this!!!!!! It took some hours to make backup copies of files, find and record internet connection and other settings, reinstall programs and files. But it made a noticeable difference.

Good Luck

If it's working for you, why change? :) It's not as much of a resource hog (or security hole) as IE.

I don't know who your friend is or why you're even listening to him but if you were really concerned about speed, you wouldn't be running a 633MHz CPU & just 191MB RAM.

BTW, why is it 191MB? Does that mean you have 192MB (128 + 64) & your onboard video is using a whopping 1MB? If that's the case, I suggest you install a video card...any video card...just to get you off the weak/crappy onboard graphics. And adding more RAM would definitely improve your overall Windows experience. If your board supports it, increase the RAM amount to 512MB. WinME can't deal with more than 512MB without tweaking the VCache settings in the System.ini file so it's best to just stop at 512MB. Anything beyond that is subject to the 'law of diminishing returns' anyway.

There are also a ton of tweaks that can be made to WinME to make it much more responsive. I don't know if you've done them or not? One of the big ones is to turn off System Restore...the ME version is garbage. It's a resource hog, it uses a lot of HDD space & it simply doesn't work well. You should also change the Typical Role of the PC from Desktop to Network Server. Another change should be to disable 'Use Transition Effects' under Display Properties > Effects. These 3 changes should improve performance noticeably. Wallpaper & screensavers can slow the system too because they're held in memory. The simpler they are, the better. If you have a fancy design or picture for your wallpaper, change it to just a solid color (WinME blue?) & set the screensaver to 'none', then adjust your Power Scheme settings to turn off the monitor after 'x' number of minutes. And ALWAYS disable Standby & Hibernate on a desktop machine.

Besides that, you should be using a cleaner such as CCleaner Slim (without the Yahoo toolbar/spyware) & you should run MSCONFIG to disable any useless programs from loading at startup & hogging resources.

How do I find out what graphics and memory card to get. I don't have the manual and someone repaired it so I'm not sure whats in it. I was going to send you a BeLark Advisor diagnosis of my system but when I tried to send it the first confirmation page said don't send a Highjack This log unless an expert requested it. I don't think Belark advisor is a Highjack This log but I wanted to be sure first. Could I send the BeLark diagnostic to you? It might have the info you or someone else needs to tell me what type of card for grapics (video)aand memory to get. Thank you

You could have saved us all a lot of trouble if you had simply said, "I have an HP Pavilion 6735". Or maybe you could have reminded us of this old thread:

Obviously your friend hasn't a clue . You can use FF just fine with ME . That being said ME is only supported up to version 2.X , is not supported on FF3 . You can use as many browsers as you want , its just another program on your harddrive. As long as you don't have them setup to showup in the toolbaron startup its not taking any resources other than harddrive space. I use it all the time on my 933 mghz machine with 382 meg of ram and it works fine . Have 2 other browsers that use too , Netscape,Opera . If want to clean up your machine and get rid of stuff you don't I would suggest using CCLEANER and Glary Utilities.

and it would also be better off had rhodeye used the DirectX diagnostic tool [dxdiag.exe] or the Microsoft System Information tool [msinfo32.exe] to gather specs of his HP computer without the unnecessary details. Those tools are built into the WinME OS. I have an HP Pavilion 7840 PC that used to have WinME a long time ago but have upgraded the OS in the summer of 2007.

As for Firefox under WinME, the latest 2.x release ( works fine with it.
