Hi.

I am currently using Windows ME and I'm thinking about upgrading to XP. I'm aware that you can get the upgrade version of XP but this basically just writes over and updates Windows WE. I want to do a fresh install with NTFS as the files system and I've heard this is also the best way to ensure a new OS is stable.

Is it possible to buy the upgrade version of XP, delete my current OS and do a fresh install from the upgrade disc. I'd read that this is possible as the upgrade version only asks for you to insert your previous version of windows into the drive as proof.

Any advice?

The upgrade version does update ME, it does exactly what you want to do. You can install it the way you suggest in your post, or you could take the easier installation option and insert the XPcd and select new installation and select reformat to ntfs(recommended) or fat32. It will reformat the drive and do a clean installation erasing ME and everything associated with it. Be sure to keep your MEcd in the same safe place as your XPcd, just in case you ever have to reinstall XP again.

hello
you can do a clean install with an upgrade cd there are seveal ways
the first way is you need a real 98 or m.e cd not a recovery cd. and just format from xp cd and install and at a certian point it will ask you to install 98 or m.e cd to check that you own a valid one and it finashes installing after that.
should you have recovery cd,s you can still do a clean install but will need to have a second partion to install xp in. have m.e on c: install xp on d: it will see the partion with m.e and that will qualify you for clean install of xp from up grade cd.i have done the seconed on works fine.
i have allso had xp instald on fat32 it worked well.they say for security ntfs is better because win 95-98-m.e machines cant read ntfs. but ntfs is a bit harder to truble shoot than fat because of this.
have a nice day

It should read DOES NOT UPGRADE ME, you can also use a 98cd, NT, 2000 to do an upgrade. It is just proof of a previous Microsoft qualifying operating system, not a program update.
