I have win98SE installed on the computer I use, but was considering upgrading to winME, mostly because of the system restore function. Is it really worth upgrading to winME, or not?
Just wondering.

I would not recommend the "system restore" feature of ME as a reason to upgrade. Do you know the limitations that system restore has, and the drive space and resources it uses?

I'm with capt,

I certainly wouldn't upgrade to ME on the strength of it's system restore. You will find that a hefty percentage of regular experienced users turn it off and disregard it.

System restore is one of the biggest generaters of ME error messages known. From personal experience I turned it off a long time a go and have never encountered a genuine ME error message since -- and don't expect to either.

I'm not saying everyone should turn it off because I'm not, It's a great security blanket for some people and it does serve a genuinly useful function -- but that's assuming it works correctly 100% of the time.

If I were you and I was looking for an upgrade I'd make the jump to XP and preferably XP pro, but all XP's have the restore function.

That way your spending your money on a product that has complete long term future support from it's masters and on the whole, a more stable operating system.

BTW, I'm an ME fan and use it at home out of choice -- most times. I just wouldn't spend the money on it if I were in the market for an upgrade.

beosuser, doesn't 'Go back' offer the same thing (almost) in 98SE? If you decide to go with ME, understand that it had it's got problems 'out of the box'. Fixable, but problems nonetheless. If you have the resources to support it, XP is probably a better choice. I use/like ME, but if I had it to do again... Dunno.

xp is definately the better way to go
you can do a lot more with xp
ed, goback does basically the same as system restore
however goback is a huge hard drive hog and it backs up your entire hard drive
whenever you revert back as well the information saved is basically gone and you cannot recover it as well as the information still taking up space in your hard drive

your welcome

I upgraded to Windows ME 3 days ago from Win 98 with a copy I won off of Ebay. I love it. I have had no problems so far and it functions great on my machine. Can't understand why people are having so many problems.
