I am currently using a Compaq Presario 5003US that came with Windows ME installed. I want to upgrade my operating system to Windows XP Pro. I was told my system may not be compatible with xp Pro. How can I find out. I've contacted Compag and they weren't really any help and I've been to Microsoft's home page and they want $35.00 to answer a question about THEIR product!

There are several websites, but I found PC Pitstop XP Readiness test to be the best. It will test both your hardware and also give you an evaluation your software programs. Take care and all the best!

I have installed xp on many systems and found it to work well on all of them...including the ready made jobbies that we all know and hate! The usual thing to suffer with a lesser OS is non-detection of hardware but i've never had this prob with xp.
By the way, you'd do worse than to get your video, sound and modem drivers ready beforehand downloaded and ready for xp.

Hello Jetsticks...

Try using Microsoft's XP Upgrade Advisor. It is a free download and will check your system for hardware/software compatibility issues.

You can read about and download the Upgrade Advisor at the following weblink:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp

By using the PC Pitstop XP Readiness Test and Microsoft's XP Upgrade Advisor, you should find out if your system is XP compatible. Both tests are excellent sources to determine compatibility issues or conflicts.

Let me know if you have any problems with the weblink I listed and I will get back with you.

Good luck....texascowboy3000

I did the PC Pitstop test and evrything passed with flying colors. Then I downloaded the XP readiness test, I just hit open I didnt put on hard drive, anyway it gave me a report that says almost all my software will either have to be updated and some can't even be used. Like my lexmark printer and scanner, it said it would need more files to work on xp, where do you get these files? It also says my logitech quickcam cannot be used with xp. All my hardware passed with flying colors, I would definetly run the xp readiness test. They were honest, I'm keeping it just the way it is. My computer hasn't crashed in about a year. I think thats good enough of a reason to keep ME.
