OS: Win ME
CPU/Ram: 133MHz/512MB
Comment:

I would like to install Win 98 SE on a machine that currently has Win ME on it. Is it better to get the upgrade CD or the Full version for the install? I was told Win 98 SE would be a better choice than Win2K because of the drivers. Please advise! Win ME is painful.... Thanks!

As WinME is technically the upgrade to Win98 (not the other way around) I don't think the system will let you do it as an upgrade, so best to format and re-install 98SE from scratch. I'd agree Win 98 seems more stable than ME, but you do lose a couple of useful features like System Restore. Also if you were thinking of going for W2000, why not go for XP? - hasn't got the driver problems, and personally I've had no problems with running it on any of our 4 systems.

Or you could dual boot 98 and 2000 / XP and have the best of both

I wouldn't try to run Win 2000 or XP on a 133 MHz machine. Granted, it will run the OS but that about all it will do.

I agree about installing Win2k or xp on a 133 machine. I guess i will have to do a clean install...I keep getting the kernel32.dll error and crashing with ME thus my desire to change the OS. Is there another solution to fix this problem?

If you're not doing anything memory intensive with your system, it will probably run better with just 64mb of RAM.

Your board may accept 512MB of memory, but I'd be willing to bet it's based on an old Intel chipset & only 64MB is cacheable.

Here's some info about kernell32 errors:

P.S. I'd stick with ME & tweak the hell out of it!

The last link jam gives is the homepage on this response. This is a guide to how you can run Windows ME trouble free.
