I've trying to upgrade to IE6 SP1. My system downloads everything and starts the install, but aborts about halfway thru, says that certain items were not install and that I should restart and hit "resume". Never has worked. I also turned off my firewall, VirusScan, etc. to make sure nothing was preventing the file from loading.

I received this from WinXP in USA after I had the same problem.

It worked perfect for me.

It seems the IE6 SP1 was not installed properly. Regarding your question, uninstalling IE6 may not resolve the problem (to uninstall IE 6, in Control Panel, double click Add/Remove Programs, on Install/Uninstall, click on "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Tools", then click Add/Remove. Click Restore my previous Windows Configuration)

Based on my experience, it is caused by incorrect file versions or registry entries.

To troubleshoot this issue: Let's rename the following .dll files to .old (they are usually located at Windows\System folder). To rename the files, boot the computer with a startup disk. If you haven't the Startup disk, we can perform the following steps to create one startup disk in Windows:

1). Boot into Normal Mode. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel.

2). Double click the Add/Remove Program icon.

3). Click the Startup Disk tab.

4). Insert one floppy disk into the floppy drive, click Create Disk.

Boot the computer with the startup disk. Choose “Minimal Boot” or “Start the computer without CD-ROM support”. To rename a file, type the command at MS-DOS Prompt:

ren .

Actxprxy.dll

Advpack.dll

Inseng.dll

Jobexec.dll

Urlmon.dll

Wininet.dll

Wintrust.dll

Url.dll

For example, to rename the C:\Windows\System\Actxprxy.dll, type the following command:

Ren C:\Windows\System\Actxprxy.dll Actxprxy.old

Reboot the computer into Normal Mode. Make a backup of the registry (Run Scanreg.exe). Click Start, click Run and type: Scanreg.exe . When it ask you “Would you like to back up the registry now”, click Yes.

Next, delete the following registry keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

To delete a registry key, perform the following steps:

1. Click Start, click Run and type: Regedit

2. Click OK. In Regedit, browse to a registry key. For example, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup

3. Right-click on the key and click Delete.

After the above steps, remove the C:\Windows\Temp and the C:\Windows\Msdownld.tmp folders, and run C:\Temp\IE6setup.exe to perform the reinstallation of IE in Safe Mode.

This came from W. and helped me out. Thought I'd better put it here for you so it will appear in more recent searches.

Dog.

Open Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer but Windows Explorer as in
the
file management program). From there go to C:/Program Files/Internet
Explorer/Uninstall Information. Right click on the Uninstall
Information
folder and select Properties. Uncheck the Hidden box and then click OK
or
Apply. A confirmation screen will come up. Select the Apply changes to
this folder, subfolders and files button. This will unhide all of the
files
in the Uninstall Information folder. You then need to move (not delete)
all
of these files to another folder that is empty. Any one will do or make
a
new temporary folder. It doesn't really matter just as long as the
Uninstall Information folder is empty. Reboot your computer. After
rebooting double check and make sure that the Uninstall Information
folder
is empty. You should then be able to install all of the troublesome
components (hopefully). If everything goes well you can then move all
of
those files that you moved previously back into the Uninstall
Information

Good luck,
