Comment:

When I boot up my cpu, it now goes to a login and password screen to Windows. Someone in family inadvertently changed this playing around. BigBob tried to solve my problem by telling me to go to start/settings/control panel/network and selecting "client for Microsoft Newtwork", which I did. However, when I boot up, I still get the sign-in and password screen for Windows. Can anyone please help me eliminate this step? Thanks

"Windows Login" option works better.

But you also have to remove any user passwords also. Try going to the C:\Windows folder and deleting any userid.PWL files and reboot.

If you type in the name klik ok but dont enter the password
And if this dont work try start/settings/control panel/passwords/user profile tab and make sure all users of this comp use the same pref is dotted

Micki1960,

See if this page at computing.net helps. If it does great, if not, let us know, and we'll go into it a little more.

p.s. (Side note:) After doing things, and still get a prompt for password. Try leaving the password empty, and click OK

Thanks for the messages. However, S.T.A.R.,when I went to Passwords in the Control Panel, there was no change password tab.
JackG., where do I find any userid.PWL files. I looked under Windows folder & found nothing similar.

I have tried this; it either says "you have failed to enter name and/or password. Please enter". I can, however, click on Cancel, and it will go to my desktop directly. What annoys me is that I at times boot up computer, go do something else and then return, expecting to see my desktop and I see a Windows Password screen.

This is not the problem; I have the name and password. I do not want to deal with this EVERY time that I boot up the computer. That is why I want to get rid of the Windows Log In screen. I want it to go directly to the desktop as it always has. But evidently this is not going to happen. Thanks anyway.

Micki1960,

You changed the primary network logon to "Windows Logon", and restarted the computer? (Yes - No and tell exactly what happened when it restarted. Was the password section blank, and if so, did you leave it blank and click OK.)

As JackG said, go to the windows folder, and look for a file(s) with the extension .PWL {if extensions aren't seen, have to make a change. Control Panel, Folder Options, View (Tab), if, if "Hide file extensions for known file types" is checked. Uncheck it} The userid part, of userid.PWL would either be the "Registered to:" in the 'System' Properties, or the username your daughter made. If more than one .PWL file. Delete the username{daughters} first, and restart the computer. If, if the password place is blank, click OK. If there is an entry, at the password. Clear it, and click OK.

If that didn't help, and there's another .PWL, delete it, and try the same.

Thank you, thank you. I deleted the .pwl files and this DID solve my problem. Could not at first find these files but did a search.
