Just go to http://messenger.msn.com/ select the Download Now link. Open the file when prompted. You should now be able to upgrade by simply following the on-screen instructions presented to you. Your current settings will be preserved.

Thanks james for answering so quickly.Because of some of the problems I have been having with msn 5.0 I really wanted to remove it completly so there would be no carry over to the updated one.Problems that may be in the registry, etc.Any help you may be able to give me on the removal would be greatly appreciated.Thank you again.

The problems you're having with 5.0 are probably just compatibility problems with the new program and protocols that are being used now. I would think following James Greenwood's advice would be just fine.
