I need to uninstall Windows ME. Window's Help says to go to "Add/Remove Program" to uninstall but Window ME does not appear there. How else can I uninstall Windows?

You can't uninstall it. You will have to reformat your hard drive and then install the new os.

How do I reformat my hard drive?

Also, at what point will I need to repartition my hard drive (before or after I reformat). Currently, there is only 1 partition at 2gig (I have a 40gig hard drive).

First you boot from a boot diskette. You execute fdisk at that point. You delete any extended partitions, and then the primary. Once everything is deleted, you create a primary bootable partition.

Once that is done, you format the partition. After the format, you can begin the install of Windows.

How much did you pay for this bargin may I ask?

good lord son, if you dont know how to format
a harddrive you sure are going to have fun with fdisk. put a floppy in and go to control panel, add/remove programs, startup disk and follow the directions. then, when you have a startup disk leave it in and reboot. you can fdisk and format once the a:
prompt comes up. be warned if you dont know
what you are doing you could get into trouble.

I am an fdisk walkthrough complete with pictures

Format is easy, once you get past fdisk. You use fdisk to tell the hard disk that you would like to set the file system as FAT32(so you can have a partition bigger than 2 GB) and to partition your drive so you can format it.

That was an extremely simplistic description, but the link above will tell you quite a bit more.

MK - I wrote this up for the message board at geek.com and then I found your message here. Read below - it may only let you know that you cant use the uninstall and do have to screw around reformatting but might be some help.

Cheers

Shell

As my hard drive is reformatting, I find myself with time to type up this info on releasing yourself from the clutches of Windows ME (btw I do recommend ME - as long as all your hardware is the best, most well known brands, ME is pretty good).

Ok, courtesy of info on the WinME startup disk I created:

You cannot uninstall WinME if you did not select to save Unistall info when you were setting it up. There should be two files - winundo.dat and winundo.ini. If these do not exist, then you cant uninstall (thanks a pantload, bill).

You risk your data if you uninstall when you have changed partitions since installing WinME.

*********************************
If you are going to uninstall (and like others do not have WinME listed in Add/remove programs) then create a WinME startup floppy disk (third tab on add/remove programs in control panel).

Restart 'puter on this floppy disk, select option 1 on Startup menu and press enter.

Close help file

At command prompt type following, pressing enter after each line:

smartdrv
:
cd\\command
uninstal.exe

* is the letter of the drive that contains the Windows folder (default is C)
* is the name of the Windows folder (default is windows)

Type Y to continue when prompted. Should take several minutes

Smartdrive is not required to run uninstall but could speed things up considerably.

***************************************

Well the hard drive has reformatted - Windows 98 - welcome back!

Re my last message, some of the characters in the uninstall instructions screwed up in the cut and paste.

Just create the startup disk, boot up on it, and read the info - it's all there.
