Uninstalling ME

Comment:
I am in the process of uninstalling Windows ME upgrade(from the DOS prompt) in order to return to Windows 98. (The system would not boot properly - it was hanging up at the Window ME screen)
The system ran scandisk, and asked me if I want to proceed.
Then the following messages occured -
Restoring Directory Structure - 316 Checking files - system worked through about 32000 files over a period of 4 days.
Now it is still checking files but counting back from 32000 - which should take another 4 days.
I'm at a loss to decide whether to stop the process by shutting the system down or just let it run for another 3-4 days. Is there any way I can speed it up?

Just want to clarify - the computer was originally shipped with Win 98, and I upgraded to ME. Can't I uninstall ME and go back to 98?

Yes you can.
I just asked someone who's done it but in true goldfish faulty memory style, he can't remember anything about it, he just knows he did it and it worked fine.
He said, he doesn't remember it taking that long either and pulled a face and walked off.

I can't get to add/remove files - my PC has been "checking files" for 5 days. Before that, I couldn't boot up with windows and I started the uninstall from the DOS prompt.

personly i think you'd be better off formating hd then install win98, the way your going about it will surely screw things up.
