I want to uninstall IE6 from WinME, but when I try to install IE5.5 it tells me that a newer version has been found on my system. The bad news? The Add/Remove entry is gone, because I deleted the backup files for IE5.5.
Now, I am almost sure there must be some kind of "delete the registry", "move this file from C:\WINDOWS\System" technique to remove all traces of IE6 and go back to IE5.5. Can someone please tell me what it is?
Thank you so much for any help.

Actually, I have found these instructions to uninstall IE6 only if you plan to reinstall Windows.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;312451Can I follow these procedures to just install an older copy of IE? That should work, wouldn't it, or would it cause problems?
Here are the procedures:
Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
In the Named box, type iemigrat.dll; migrate.dll; 9xmig.dll.
In the Look in list, select My Computer, and then click Find Now.
In the list of found items, right-click the Iemigrat.dll that is stored in the C:\Windows\System folder and then on the shortcut menu that appears, click Rename.NOTE: If Iemigrat.dll is not found, continue to step 6.
Rename Iemigrat.dll to iemigrat.old, and then press ENTER.
Right-click the Migrate.dll file that is stored in the C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\W2K folder, and then click Rename on the shortcut menu that appears.
Rename Migrate.dll to migrate.old, and then press ENTER.
Rename 9xmig.dll to 9xmig.old, and then press ENTER.
On the File menu, click Close.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
Expand the following registry subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\Migration\100
NOTE: If this key is not present, continue to step 8.
On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.
In the File name box, type migration 100, and then click Save.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
On the Confirm Key Delete message that appears, click Yes.
Expand the following registry subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\Migration DLLs
On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.
In the File name box, type migration dlls, and then click Save.
In the right pane of the Registry Editor window, right-click the entry that has the following value:"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\W2K"
On the shortcut menu that appears, click Delete.
On the Confirm Value Delete message that appears, click Yes.
Expand the following registry subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\Migration\650
NOTE: If this key is not present, skip to step 19.
On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.
In the File name text box, type migration 650, and then click Save.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When the "Confirm Key Delete" message appears, click Yes.

Hi Rachel--If you use the the instructions you have you will have to re-install windows.try the above link first to see if it will give you a solution.

Hi Rachel,
There is a small routine called IEradicator that will clean your machine of ie. You then load ie5.5. I forgot where I got this program, I'm sure you can track it down with google,

Rachel, one of the default settings in IE6(applies to OE6 too, since OE6 is part of it) is to prevent downloading an attachment which may contain a virus. That seems to block mail and pictures which were allowed in earlier versions. That feature of 6.0 seems to be causing all manner of problems and the setting can be altered (under security). Not really a bad idea (the setting) so long as we are aware of it. (Their bad). If that is your objection to V6.0, it is easily fixable and most reports I have heard say it is superior to 5.5. HTH.
