Hello everyone; this is driving me mad, so please help!
I did a reinstall of Windows ME today due to my system getting a bit wobbly (urlmon.dll error, Windows Protection crashes, run32.dll errors...), which I've done before with no problems. You can find my original request for how to reinstall ME still on this board by searching for my name if you need to know exactly what I did.
However, this time I can't reupdate to IE 6.1 from my current install of 5.5; every time I try, I get the following error...
"Setup was unable to install all the components. Please close all applications and try running Setup again. "
If I restart, it tries again at boot up, but fails with the same error again, which ever options I choose. Microsoft offers the following solutions here;
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303399
But none of them work. Internet Explorer, Outlook Express etc do not appear at all under Control Panel. Renaming the files listed from .dll to .old just messes up Windows Explorer, and actxprxy.dll and urlmon.dll cannot be renamed as Windows always seems to be using them, even under safe mode... Nothing I seem to do works, so I'm stuck with older IE for now. Does anyone have ANY idea how to get back to IE6 without rolling my system back a week to a previous back up check point?
I've included the Active Setup Log.txt if you would be so kind as to have a look and see if any clues are contained within. Thanks...

I'm not gonna bother looking over all that crap. I question why you seem to be repeatedly reinstalling ME in the 1st place? You obviously have other issues that need attention & reinstalling ME isn't gonna correct them.
When's the last time you did a full virus scan? Scanned for spyware? Defragged?
Try emptying your temp folder...clear out cookies, history, & temp internet files. Connect to the internet, click on the Start button, then click Windows Update...install all the critical updates...IE6.0 SP1 & Outlook Express 6.0 should be included

I'm not gonna bother looking over all that crap. I question why you seem to be repeatedly reinstalling ME in the 1st place?
-----
Because if you look at my earlier post you'll see I have a recovery disc; and the only way to repair the OS is doing a full install from the files on the hard drive.
-----
You obviously have other issues that need attention & reinstalling ME isn't gonna correct them.
-----
It corrects the ones related to Win ME. Presumably there is something else involved with the rest of my system, such as drivers or ancillary programs untouched by the reinstall.
------
When's the last time you did a full virus scan?
------
Two days ago, with up to date defintions
------
Scanned for spyware?
------
Last night. Ad-Aware SE first, Spyware Search And Destroy following
------
Defragged?
------
Sunday. And a scan disk in between IE6 attempts 5 hours ago. No errors found or fixed.
------
Try emptying your temp folder...clear out cookies, history, & temp internet files.
------
That was suggested in the MS Support article I linked too. As I said, I've done everything suggested there. It's set to clear every morning anyway.
------
Connect to the internet, click on the Start button, then click Windows Update...
------
Or alternatively, download the ie6install.exe from the MS page. But neither one works, I've tried them both; it refuses to install. Deleting the folder with the IE downloads and redownloading doesn't help either. Something is blocking install every time.
------
install all the critical updates
------
There were a few suggested at first, but they all stuck when I first reinstalled the OS. There is only 2 suggested now; One is "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 Service Pack 3, English Version", which never sticks anyway because 1.1 .NET is already installed... and the other is "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (Windows 98, Windows Me)" which is logged as being succesful, but always fails at install as described above.
Everything else is fine. I keep my system up to date, despite what you might think. But there's a lot on it, and sometimes there are obvious conflicts, and this is one of those times I suspect. It's not the health of my overall system, old and used as it is. It's something else.

Ok; here's where I am at the moment.
The Win ME tweaks link didn't help with IE6, although it did help spot a bug I'd occasionally seen in the past (ME freezing at boot due to hogging too much memory).
Memtest86 picked up no errors after completing a full cycle scan.
Temperatures in Bios are normal for the motherboard/cpu.
Dog's Security did recommend one more spyware destroyer I didn't have, CWShredder, and I thought for a moment that it had solved the problem, but it was simply a false positive of CWS.jksearch and CWS.hidden.dll unfortunately.
At present, IE6 refuses to install still. So I've switched over to Firefox for now. Any further help woul be appreciated however, as I'd like to know what's wrong with my IE install. Thanks for the help so far...

Did you try the above? It might be more relevant than the security stuff.

D'oh! For some reason I wandered straight past that url Dog... I feel such a klutz, especially as that was indeed the correct solution! Thanks alot Dog! (Although I have to say, I'm still tempted to stay with Firefox now, as it is much better than IE6 I'm slowly discovering :) )

I AM NOT ALONE!!! I am so grateful to have found this webpage. I had a system corruption and reinstalled Windows ME, after which the Internet Explorer SP1 download just wouldn't reinstall no matter what I did. Simply removing the old contents of "Uninstall Information" in Program Files\Internet Explorer did the trick straight away. My only mistake was spending five hours trying to crack the problem myself instead of asking someone else. Thanks guys!

Me again... There's still a small problem in that I keep catching my system trying to reinstall Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (KB837009); it's listing as successful, but the next day at update check it tries to install again. Deleting the internet explorer files didn't help with this, and I can't find any Outlook Express Uninstall folder. Any ideas where this little problem is lying? Thanks again...
