After downloading and installing upgrades, during restart I get the Message Unable to Update System 1% to 2% - Press any button to continue. Whats wrong?

Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2 %1: %2
Windows could not upgrade the file from %1 to %2 Related to norton system works 2000. Its not compatible with windows me.
Try one of these. They are both close but neither say unable to update system

click start-search for files-type in wininit.ini then-
rename wininit.ini to wininit.old
then reboot.
I read a q-article saying if wininit.exe is corrupted, extract a new copy,and overwrite
the existing one.
to do so-click start-run-type in msconfig-click ok-click extract file-type in wininit.exe-click start-in the where to extract from type in, c:\windows\options\install
in where to extract to,type in c:\windows
click ok. choose yes to replace it,with a fresh copy.
reboot.

Another trick for this one if you cannot find a wininit.ini file:
Boot into DOS.
Reextract wininit.exe using the EXT.exe command found on a Win98 or WinME bootdisk.
Run winint.exe by typing it at a c:\windows prompt.This should create a winint.ini file.
Run winint.exe again.Try to boot up.
If you still cannot boot up, now rename wininit.ini to *.old and try to boot up.
This has worked for me on one of these stubborn error messages before.

Response 1: Sorry I typed the wrong message. It was your 1st choice 'Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2 %1: %2'
Response 2: Tried the 'search all hard drives for wininit.ini' but it could not be found.
Response 3: Don't have a boot disk. Only have the origional CD used to restore the computer. Any other suggestions?
