I just downloaded the latest update for AdAware and something went wrong I guess. I downloaded the zip file, unzipped it and went to the file named feffile.awr. When I clicked to open it, I got a message saying Windows is unable to open this file, couln't open it with AdAware either.

I see a couple of other people here successfully did it. Does anyone know where I went wrong? I have the latest version of AdAware. I have done the ref updates previously without problem.

Thanks an advance.

Q:What is a referencefile, how do I install it?
A: The referencefile is used by Ad-aware and Ad-watch in a way like a virus-definition file used by virus-scanners.
By default this small file is installed in the Ad-aware\Ad-watch folder. The RefUpdate add-on makes sure you always have the most recent referencefile installed.
Before using this utility the first time, please open the options-menu, and specify the destination directory in which the files will be downloaded.
This should be the same folder, Ad-aware is using for the referencefile.
By default, RefUpdate assumes this is your Ad-aware installation directory.

To check for updates, please follow these steps:
1.choose one of our mirrors (they are updated simultaneously,
2.click on connect *
3.follow the text messages for details
4.if an newer referencefile is available, it will be installed
5.the connection will be closed
6.if your referencefile has been updated, please restart Ad-aware and Ad-watch.

To install the referencefile manually, follow these steps:
1.Download the latest reffile.zip from our download-page.
2.Unzip it in the Ad-aware folder, replace the outdated version of the reffile.awr file.
3.Restart Ad-aware or Ad-watch.

*When you are using a proxy, please set the details in the preferences menu

Ok, I got it now. I downloaded the RefUpdatev2.01 but it shows as 2.00. It said it downloaded successfully.

So I ran that and it said I had the latest update, but when I started AdAware, it still showed the older signature file.

So I went back and downloaded the zip file reffle.zip again and unzipped it to the AdAware folder (which I didn't do before, I unzipped it to another place). Now AdAware is showing the latest sig. file.

Now my question is - Isn't the RefUpdatev.2.01 supposed to to that automatically instead of me having to manually download the reffile.zip and unzip etc.??

When I had the previous version of AdAware, I had the RefUpdate and it worked, but this one didn't seem to, can't figure that out.

Anyone?

Yes suzi, refudate should do it by itself...

Launch RefUpdate, select Options/Preferences and make sure the update is directed to Ad-aware folder.

If one of the RefUpdate sig files doesn't register when you use RefUpdate, try using one of the other servers in the drop down list.
Wyvernworks,Tomcoyote and if it's there, Majorgeeks. These I've found to be more reliable than Lavasoft.nu.
