My PC is 1997 vintage. It came with a WD Ultra ATA 33 3.2 gig drive. A couple of years ago I got a 15 gig WD Ultra ATA 66 drive. When I used the Ultra ATA Manager utility from the Data Lifeguard Tools set provided by Western Digital it recognized that my new drive was Ultra ATA 66 while the controllers on the M/B were Ultra ATA 33. It advised me to use the utility to reconfigure the ATA 66 drive to Ultra ATA 33. I clicked OK and I heard the drive go "click click". Now I have a WD Ultra ATA 100 drive @ 20 gigs and I am wondering if I should use the Ultra ATA Manager again to reconfigure the new drive to Ultra ATA 33? The drive has Win Me on it and all seems to be well. Does having a M/B with ATA 33 controllers with an ATA 100 drive make any difference? "If it ain't broke don't fix it?"

If your mobo supports only ATA33 then your harddisk will only goes on this speed eventhough it is ATA100 capable. It is not necessary to use your ATA config utility. GoodLuck!

I am not sure if the 100 will work, but just for curiosity's sake, why don't you upgrade? Seems like you are missing out on a lot of other advantages like 4x AGP, USB, as well as chip archetecture?

It will work just like if your mobo supports ATA100 and your harddrive supports only ATA33.
Brant, your suggestion is right, it will be better if he go upgrading.
