Hello Everyone,
I have hit another roadblock trying to load my full version of wme over w98. The boot disk works fine and triggers the cd, the cd transfers files to the hd, when the machine reboots, it freezes, at this point, without reaching the desktop. I have renamed win.com, win.old, there are two large .ini files proto###.ini and protocol.ini, these I renamed the extensions .zni. The reason while I touched these .ini files was because of size, other posters at comp.net reported their computers got error messages and they found the trouble was a large .ini file. I found two and renamed them both. The last large file is actually the protocol.ini file, but to play it safe since they were next to each other in the directory, I changed both.
I hope I can get further help from the contributors to this website, I appreciate your input and help and thank you in advance,
frank

Hi Frank, hello everyone,
The first thing I would try is disabling the antivirus protection in the BIOS.
Best Regards,
Mesich

Hello Mesich,
thank you for your reply, tried to post a message a while ago and was told I was timed out (whatever that means). I have the acer aspire that was phased out by acer, I tried to get into the bios, and so far, have not been successful. The os downloads to the point where the program o reboots the os, at this point it freezes,(just before the desktop appears). Do you feel the firewall or the av program is causing this freezing action. A number of the posters to this site said the problem was an .ini file, a large one but did not pinpoint which one it was. The only two I found that were large is proto### and protocol. M$ don't make it easy, they even have an -I don't know- error message.
If you might have a combination of bios reaching keys, I would appreciate them, as I have tried a number of combinations and so far, have come up empty.
Again, thank you for your further help, so I can keep the old machine,
frank

Hello again, Mesich,
Thank you for the key to the bios. I checked all the sectors of the bios and could not find the key to disabling the firewall or the av programs. Tried reloading the wme os and got the same results as before. Thank you for your continued help,
frank
