Want to transfer files from old computer(windows 98) to newer Dell computer (windows ME) What is simplist way: with usb to usb transfer cable, or with thumb drive? Guess either method will entail finding necessary drivers.

The USB xfer cables I have come with software, but it's kinda rough.

Assuming they don't both have NICs, the simplest way without buying anything is to put both HD is the new box and drag 'em and drop 'em.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

Thanks for reply-Mechanix2Go. Guess I'm below average cause I've never gone inside old or new computer. If my OEM version of windows ME has all the necessary files I may try one of the name brand thumb drives. What do you think?

If you don't mind the cost, go for it.

They come in handy for many neat things.

mechanix2go - Thanks again. bought usb 2.0 flash drive by PNY tech. Discover that my windows ME (oem version ) does not have usb storage files. Have surfed net for download info for needed files - so have found only sites that require "sign up" or dollars.
Any suggestions? Oh, do not have original Windows ME CD.

"windows ME (oem version ) does not have usb storage files"

I guess this means that ME won't access USB.

Since this is the "new" PC, I think you better get a real OS onto it and save yourself some grief.

I have a OEM version of Windows Me on my PC ,when I purchased a PNY 256M.B. thumb drive ,it came with a CD for Win98 ,for WinMe and WinXP it said it was plug and play ! Well they where wrong ,like you when I tried using the thumb drive ,it was a no go ,it said this file and that file missing , the Wizard for installing new hardware would not do the job, however what I did was write down the name of the file it said was needed ,I believe it came to three files all, I would extract one file and then it would not finish installing the thumb drive listing another missing file ,I would go thru the process again of looking in the .cab files for the needed file .Finally after extracting all three of these files ,it finished installing all of the things nessary for the thumb drive to show up in My Computer/device manager as a U.S.B. storage device ,it puts a little icon in the taskbar for docking and undocking the thumb drive . If you dont have these needed files on your system the OEM who installed your O/S probably did not place them on your H.D as he should have ,howver you should have been given a OEM recovery CD copy of Windows Me ,and any of the files you need should be on the CD. If not you can probably find the needed files online somewhere for download ,perhaps even Microsofts Knowledge Base ? First thing is try installing it again and writing down whatever file itsays is needed. You may have to go thru these steps a fwew times as I did B/4 installation completes ! Going to PNY's web site may help also ,perhaps enough PC owners with WinMe on their system contacted them and they have something to hel with installation for /WinMe ?
Good Luck ,Nick

Nick - You are so right! The PNY flash drive will not install on the oem version of Windows ME with just a few clicks. I've read several of Microsofts instructions how to extract necessary files - plus reading PNY's installation instructions. Neither have completed the task. You mentioned needing three files. Think I have found two of the files(usbstor & usbntmap)and am still at ground zero. Will keep plugging, but if I'm not on the right track will welcome further help and advice. Thanks
