Hi all.
I was reading somewhere but can't remember where, that there is a freeby program that can be installed in Win ME to slow down the "Shutdown" proceedure. The reasoning behiond it was due to the fact that modern computers work so fast that there is a possibility that data may be lost during shut down. This apparently was not a problem in days gone by.
Does anyone know where I can locate such program and what is the concensus of you guys in that regards?

I don't think you have a problem...windows shutdown encompasses closes any open apps, each in the proper manner. This way, data is not lost. Data may be lost if you are required to close an app in response to the 'this program is not responding....' message. the best way to ensure non-loss of data is to close each app before you shut down. Speed is not the problem.

The update is called the
Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package(4.90.3000.0)
and it resolves a problem which is caused by data not being written back to the hard drive quickly enough before the system shuts down in a very fast PC. Thus the PC thinks there has been an improper shutdown. You can obtain the update by going to this site
http://corporate.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
When you have accepted the necessary Active X control for operation, select software updates, type in the keyword cache and select the necessary options by scrolling down the page. You will then be presented with the update as a possible download. If you have kept ME up to date by using the normal Windows Update, you will probably already have this download installed.

Great info Trev..
"very fast pc" ive seen this thrown around alot concerning this topic. I was wondering if they have actual specs like "1ghz & up".
Or is it a case by case basis, depending on configuration ?
Not a priority but ive always wondered..

Thanks guys.
Yes Trev, I have been keeping ME up to date so, as you say, I probably do have the update then. I also take note of your comments Morris. I will keep an eye on this post for a little while just in case, as SMUOD has brought up a good question.

I found reference to delaying the shutdown a few seconds by inserting a wav file that will play on shutdown, giving the pc a chance to 'put everything away' before shutting down. I tried it and it has worked for me...fittingly, I found the perfect wav file for this - a clip from "2001:A Space Odyssey" where the astronaut is removing memory modules from HAL to try to shut him down and HAL protests by saying "Dave, what are you doing?"
