I am having trouble restoring my Windows ME on my Tiny Computer

I have replaced my original 20Gb hard drive with a new 80Gb Maxtor HD. Before removing the old HD I created a boot diskette and I also have the “Tiny Restore Pack” (version 1.2) with the floppy disk and CD.

I have installed the new Hard Drive and, using FDISK, successfully formatted the hard drive. The drive is recognised correctly in DOS.

I have now attempted to use my “Tiny Restore Pack” to reinstall Windows Millennium on the new hard drive but I cannot do this.

I have inserted the CD and diskette and rebooted. At the first screen I have chosen Option 2 (three options are 1: Second Chance, 2: Restore, 3: Return to Command Prompt). On the next screen I typed Y to conform I wanted to proceed.
Then the CD started and I got the following error:
Error #91 DISK MANANGER HAS BEEN DETECTED ON DRIVE 0, BUT DISK MANAGER IS NOT RUNNING. IF YOU ARE BOOTING FROM A FLOPPY, REMOVE THE FLOPPY AND REBOOT. PRESS AND HOLD THE <SPACE BAR> AS YOUR COMPUTER RESTARTS. WHEN PROMPTED INSERT YOUR BOOT FLOPPY AND CONTINUE.

When I reboot without the floppy I get a DOS message saying “Error reading OS”

Can anyone help me?? I know the hard drive and both the CD and DVD drives are working OK so it seems that the problem is with the restore pack. Will a restore pack allow me to install Windows ME on a brand new HD or do I need a different type of installation disk?

Please Help!!!

How big is the Win ME disc? If it less than around 410MB you will not have the operating system on that disc but just an image stored either on the old hard drive and the access key on this disc or the image on this disc.

See this old post of mine.......

I ended up getting a retail copy of Win ME and installed that. Works great.

A poster on here a few months back report that the company that took over from Tiny were charging £60.00 for this restore disc.
Best bet would be to ask around for a copy of Win ME as you already have a license and therefore it's not illegal!!

Microsoft told me that my PC supplier HAD to give me the operating system disc if I asked for it. I did ask and was told to go back to Microsoft.

Thanks for the info.
The disc is about the size of a CD and not an installation disk.
Looks like I'm screwed without a proper install disk.

Do you know if could install XP with an XP upgrade pack? Or would I still need the Win ME install disk to be able to upgrade?

I have sent an email to Tiny, but from what I've heard I'll be lucky to get any reply...let alone a useful one!

Martin,

Is the old HDD still functioning? If it is, use the software that came with the new drive, to copy the old, to the new. If it didn't come with any. Go to the HDD manufacturer's web page, and get it.

There are other ways also, but, give that a try. Remember, I said copy, not move.

Most ME PC's that come with a manufacturer's restore CD-ROM still have the entire Windows ME setup files under C:\windows\options\cabs or something very similar. If it still works you can put the old drive back into the PC as a slave hard disk and copy this folder to the new drive using the boot disk you made. Then you can run the setup.exe that is in that same folder. I've even left the Cabs folder on a slave hard disk and run setup from there to install onto the master hard disk.
