Comment:

Can I safely delete files that open with 'unknown application'? I have a bunch of DAT files under windows/temp that properties say open with 'unknown application'.
What other files can safely be deleted? TMP?
SWFView.dll?
AxMetaStream_0302021C.dll?
AOLUserShell.dll?
Twunk001.MTX?
Twain001.Mtx?

Thanks,
angel

angel, since the files in question are TEMP files, chances are they can be deleted with no ill effect.
In order to be sure before deleting, simply change the name of their folder from 'temp' to something profound like 'tempold'. If your machine can't find the files it is looking for because their name is unknown, you will know whether they can be deleted or not. BTW, there is a setting that I use which deletes temp files when you exit. In case there is a problem, it is easily changed back.

Take a look here:

The only temp folder contents that you cannot delete is C:\RESTORE\TEMP, because MS, defying convention (of "TEMP" meaning "TEMPORARY") put restore points there.

I don't see C\restore\temp, or c\temp\restore??
I have things in c\windows\temp like:
MmuidUpdate
ps_install-mt
Microsoft Windows Media Configuration Utility
WinWildApp
AxMetaStream_0302021C.dll
SWFView.dll

some cabinet files, lots of dat files, log files, mtx files, xml document, couple applications, and few misc.

Angel,

c:\_restore
and
c:\_restore\temp

are both, hidden system folders. So, you won't see them, with out making changes, as to what is shown. ;-) A shortcut, start...Run...Type; c:\_restore\temp (Press Enter), and it will open that folder. Leave the files alone, in those folders.
:-)

As for the c:\windows\temp folder. Yes, as said before, delete the things in that folder. Leave them in the Recycle Bin, for a little while, to see if something still needs something. If nothing is yelling at you, where did this or that go. Then delete them out of the recycle bin. That would be, the safe approach.

Good Luck,
CrazyOne
