Hey Guys!
I've got this TEMP Folder(C:\WINDOWS\TEMP) on my hard drive and was wondering if it is alrite to delete all its Contents? There are just so many files in there which i am not sure if they r important or not, so is it safe to delete them?
Also about the index.dat file, i can see this file in my Cookies Folder is it safe to delete this file?
ur help would be appreciated
Thanks

You can safely delete the contents of the Temp folder if you have rebooted since installing any programs or updates.
You cannot delete index.dat from within Windows unless you can do it by creating another user profile and delete the other profile's index.dat from there, or they use a bat file for this purpose.
Usually people delete index.dat from DOS, reached by using a startup diskette. There are programs available that can delete the index.dat file on reboot. The easiest (and safest) one I know of is MoveOnBoot, available at the Webattack site.

I just noticed I have some words in the wrong place in my post above, the "or they use a bat file for this purpose." belongs at the end of "Usually people delete index.dat from DOS, reached by using a startup diskette", sorry for my sloppy posting.
BTW, a freshly recreated (empty) index.dat file will be recreated, usually a "clean" index.dat file is either 16kb (on my system) or 32kb.

Start\Programs\Accessories\Windows Explorer. Browse to- Temporary Internet Files and delete the Content.IE5 folder. This will delete the index.dat file and all the other stored junk in there. A new one will be created on next boot.

So the following would remove the index.dat file?
Start\Programs\Accessories\Windows Explorer. Browse to- Temporary Internet Files and delete the Content.IE5 folder. This will delete the index.dat file and all the other stored junk in there. A new one will be created on next boot.

Toddster,
Yes, and you will get warnings. Do this, with IE closed (not running)
"This will delete the index.dat file and all the other stored junk in there."That also means "cookies". Just reminding you.
"A new one will be created on next boot."
Along with new folders, desktop.ini files, in the "Temporary Internet Files" folder. That's if everything goes as expected.
Good Luck

Toddster
I forgot to say. After you do this, restart the computer, right after, and before opening IE, ok.

Thanks,
By the way, what is desktop.ini files?
Also, how come some people say that the only way to delete the index.dat file is to do it manually through dos mode or automatically through a site like cleanbrowser.com? I'm confused about that.

Toddster,
(I had to open my big mouth ;-))
This will give you a little insight on desktop.ini
I'll bet, when your parents, or boss told you, that the only way to do something was a certain way. You always didn't do it that way. Maybe you do, and did :-) I don't know.
Seriously, it's a system file needed to...
Let's just leave it at, it's important, ok. Sorry, couldn't get you unconfused. Might of confused you, even more.
Everyone has their own ways of doing things. Right or wrong, is in the thoughts of the person doing it.
(The greatest of faults, is to be conscious of none)

Thanks,
Could you post your name so I could send you a message to get some more info about this? Or you could send me a message? Thanks.
