Hi

I try to keep computer running optimized as much as possible. Have a slim MSConfig / Startup; but the several that I do have running are heavy on the resources: AVG, Zone Alarm, and a spam blocker. 73% without using any programs. With just Opera going now I'm down to 52%, I opened Act and Word and I am down to 34%. Should I remove the spam blocker and Zone Alarm from tray?

I use more resources protecting from "threats" than using programs. Anyone have any insight to dilema.

thanks
Tom C.

This 73% is strange at the beginning..
I have 90%-92% starting.

I just looked at mine and with
DrWEB,TrojanHunter,Kerio starting
AND Opera opened with three windows I have systen 76%,User 79%,GDI 76%.
Opened and Outlook Express and went to 72%...

I think that ZoneAlarm or the SpamBlocker
does it.
I have two years to use ZoneAlarm and I don't know how the new versions are doing.
I remember it as a resource hog...

thanks edsod

Just to explain a little better: without AVG, Zone Alarm or Spam Blocker my system is also 93-94%. Add them in and it drops to 73%

If you hit Ctrl+Alt+Del what do you see?

Download and use old Wintop to see better what is running (It works OK in WinME)

Try this page. This guy is one of the resident Guru's at the Dell user's form. he has a bunch of excellent tutotials including one on freeing System resources.

(Ummm, copy and paste the url. I'm new to this forum and not sure what kind of code is allowed.)

...Have you run the HiJackThis program or any type of registry cleaner?
...HiJackThis will let you see what all is installing on the startup. You'd be surprise what you may have picked up over time that does not show up in MSConfig.

I really don't think that is that far out of the ballpark with ME , it is about what I am seeing on my machine with 1 browser window open and AVG ,ZA , mouse program, and the sound bar in the systray . Unless you are having some sort of specific problem I wouldn't worry about it too much .

Thanks Everyone for your help

Vipergg, I think you hit the nail on the head. But I did get rid of the Spamblocker and am using filters on Outlook Express instead. By getting rid of Spamblocker performance went from 73 to 83%.

Looks good to me! The only thing I may have any doubts on is:

mprexe.exe
WIN32 Network Service Interface Process. MPREXE.exe enables the computer to have multiple clients/protocols for networks. There are some problems with it sometimes though - see here and here. Note - why some people have it listed in start-up programs I don't know but I was asked to include it here. It automatically runs in the background. NOTE : sometimes it will appear in start-ups if you have a virus.

...But i don't in this case it's a problem.
