I cannot remove the tick in (disable systems restore)I remove it and immediatly return after re-starting and its still there.

Start -> Run... -> services.msc -> OK -> System Restore Service -> Double click -> Startup type: Disabled -> Stop -> OK
This will disable it completely, no matter what it says in the System Properties. If you ever need it again, reverse the process above - i.e. Startup type: Automatic.

I am trying enable systems restore that I havent had for ages.I thought I would try again. It seems from the posting I am not the only one with this windows ME PROBLEMS
Thanks to all

vaughan,
Just to make sure, everyone's on the same page.
When you looked, to see if "*StateMgr" was checked, in msconfig. You looked in the "Startup" (Tab), correct.
Have another question, or maybe two :-) Have you done all the updates, pertaining to "System Restore", at the update site? Could you check something else, please.
c:\windows\system\restore <
Do you have that folder? (restore) And what is in it, if you do?Have you ever used Regedit, and are you comfortable doing so? If the answers are yes, you could go to this key. I'm kind of getting the cart, ahead of the horse here. So, I'll wait on that. Besides, I went over my two questions ;-)
Let us know.
Thanks,
CrazyOne

I have no systems restore icon in systems tools.I dont know what everything means in regedit. When I find the restore file it keeps asking to restart.thanks for helping this dumb newbie.

go to start, run, msconfig, on the lower left of system configuration utility is launch system restore.

vaughan,
"I dont know what everything means in regedit."
That's ok, we shouldn't have to go in there. As I said, I was getting the cart, ahead of the horse.
"I have no systems restore icon in systems tools."
There are a lot of ways, to replace that. I'll give one example. You can right-click the "RSTRUI.EXE" (you don't have extensions showing, so you wont see the .exe), and choose Send to > Desktop (create shortcut) You can rename this shortcut, as you please. Then simply right-click, on the "System Tools", in the menu, and click "Open". Move the shorcut you made, into this folder. Close the window, and now it should be there.
"When I find the restore file it keeps asking to restart."
Could you elaborate/explain on that a little please, thanks.
As I asked before, have you done all the updates, for "System Restore".
Sorry it's taking so long for a response. This time of year, it's a little busy. ESPECIALLY today, gesh. I'll check back, when I get time. Good Luck, CrazyOne

Hi CRAZYONE I had found the restore file before and made a short cut to a tools folder on my desk top.Same thing asking to restart to use it.I think I shall have to accept that I have no restore and hope that I dont need it.
thanks VAUGHAN

This behavior can occur if a Wininit.ini file is present in the Windows directory.
do you have a wininit.exe file present?
brian5028

Hi, and you're welcome vaughan,
Maybe the third time, is the charm. Please, answer this, ok.
Response Number 8
"Have you done all the updates, pertaining to "System Restore", at the update site?"Response Number 11
"As I asked before, have you done all the updates, for "System Restore"."Have you went to the update site, for this issue?
I would like that cleared up, before I suggested any form of action, thanks.
CrazyOne
;-)

HI BRIAN5028&CRAZYONE
no wininit file.all updates checked.
I really appreciate your efforts and thanks again.
VAUGHAN

vaughan,
Ok, so you searched your HDD, and found NO "wininit.ini" file. Not even a hidden one.
I'd like, for you to check something for me, please. Go Start...Run...Type; qfecheck (Press Enter)
This will call the "Update Information Tool" Then, double-click the "WinME". Look and see, if "UPD290700" is present. Also, if it says anything is Invalid or Not Found.
If the "UPD290700" is present, and there is no "wininit.ini" on your HDD. You could do a
scanregx/fix
at RUN. Before doing this, close all programs you have running, log off the internet, save anything you're working on. The computer will have to restart, to do this.
Or the other way, would be to start the computer with a startup disk(EBD), and do it there. Have your ProductKey handy. Shouldn't be required but, better safe than sorry, if needed.
Good Luck,
and you're welcome
CrazyOne

Hi CRAZYONE
UPD290700 is present nothing invalid or not found. No SCANREGX/FIX file found in RUN or SEARCH.By startup disk I guess you mean one of the two disks that came with the machine,I am wary of using these unless a major crash occurs.I have no knowledge of a PRODUCT KEY.
thanks again for your concern and advice.
VAUGHAN

Hi vaughan,
:-)There is No X, in;
scanreg /fix
If you copied/cut and pasted that response, you would of seen the "hidden" x. My bad, silly me I put that in there, because the forum is unforgiving on spaces. They tend to disappear ;-) The "X", was to show a space, and not to be typed. Here are some examples. This explains, about the startup disk(EBD), I was talking about. (save some typing that way)
The "Product Key", should be displayed on the computer, or the CD packaging. It will be 25 letters, numbers total. In groups of five, each separated by a - I'd give you an example but, it would just be deleted, when I tried to post. Even if it was xxxxx ect. ect. ;-)
(thanks Justin. I mean thanks, in a pleasant way)By you trying to fix the registry, I'd say you found no "wininit.ini" file.
On a side note, what kind of fire wall, virus, clean up utilities do you use, to protect yourself. Just curious, is all.
Boy! With the phone calls and all, that probably was the longest time it took to type a response, gosh.
Good Luck,
CrazyOne
p.s. there are other ways to get the ProductKey, if needed. And I do mean YOUR key, not a cheat, copy, forgery.
I think you get the idea :-)

brian,
And in DOS, in windows, it's
scanreg /fixBut, each their own way.
:-)
brian, just joshingCrazyOne

is there a microsoft support article that advises a user to run scanreg or scanregw (or whatever) from a ms-dos prompt inside of windows???
