A couple of weeks ago my computer froze so I pressed ALT+CTRL+DEL twice to reboot and it didn't work. So I used the reset button on the tower. When I booted it back up it came to a black screen after the Windows ME screen and said: Cannot find SYSTEM.INI Boot with Emergency Boot Disk and type SCANREG /RESTORE - I do not have a restore disk. So what do I do without having to get one. Is it possible to do it any other way like through the setup or something? Also, what did I do to cause this and is there a way to prevent it from happening again?

Should've made one 'just in case' - but there are online sources - execute (not copy) the file to create the actual disk

I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Yeah I should of but I don't know how to make one. Don't I need a computer? Only thing I can access on my computer is the Setup. Any idea on how to make one?

I'm not sure that I understand - download the self-extracting file and run it on a Windows computer to create the floppy.

I can't log on to the computer. When you press the tower button to turn it on it does the scan and stuff for the memory then a logo Windows ME comes up before the log in screen, instead of it going to the log in screen it takes you to a black screen with the message: Cannot find SYSTEM.INI Boot with emergency boot disk and type SCANREG /RESTORE - so I can't get on to download anything. Is there a way I can get a EBD sent to me, or can I make it from a different computer with Windows ME. And, I don't really understand what the EBD is or the system.ini is my Windows ME still installed or do I need to re install it again?

Also, I'm using a WebTV box instead of a computer. So I can't download anything or make floppy's. - So if I get on a different computer and goto the site you told me to goto and download one of them files onto a floppy disk, then insert it into my computer and turn it and follow what is sais to do? And is the EBD a disk or floppy or does it not matter?

(!) - yes, I 'get' that your machine isn't able to start Windows

- - yes, d/l onto another Windows computer and run the file to create the startup disk.

"And, I don't really understand what the EBD is or the system.ini is my Windows ME still installed or do I need to re install it again?"

A bootdisk allows you to start your computer to a DOS prompt in the event that there's a problem with Windows - this lets you attempt a repair. Although WinME runs on DOS, M$ has gone to great pains to make the DOS prompt inaccessible, but includes a feature for creating the 'Emergency Boot Disk'

System.ini is a configuration file for Windows, containing various settings, and is required for a normal Windows start. Yours seems to be missing for whatever reason - fortunately, that file and a few others are automatically backed up to a CAB (compressed) file - 'scanreg /restore' is the simplest way to restore.

At this point there's no reason to believe that your entire ME installation has gone missing - just the system.ini file

" and download one of them files onto a floppy disk, then insert it into my computer"

No, no - as stated (response #1) - don't copy the WinME file, run it to create the bootdisk. With that disk, boot your computer to DOS and enter the command

scanreg /restore

or

c:\windows\command\scanreg /restore

... and select a recent backup. Remove disk and reboot

Possibly you might want to try an alternate approach.

See if you can put your machine in Safe Mode by tapping F8 for the startup menu as the machine starts. That should bypass system.ini

From there, enter the scanreg /restore command into the 'run' dialog - that might prove to be easier - I've never tried that, but:

"Scanreg.exe in Windows Millennium Edition (Me) has been updated to support all of its operations from within Windows."

As well, if you can start in Safe Mode, you could extract a copy of system.ini from one of the backups using WinZip or similar application. The backups are in C:\windows\sysbackup and and take the form of rb000.cab etc.

That website is wrong, it's not F8 to enter the setup it's F1 on mine. And there is no Safe Mode thing in there. The setup thing is called BIOS Setup Utility and theres only Main - Advanced - Security - Power - Boot - Exit and theres no Safe Mode thing in there. How do I get to it? And the disk means floppy right? or a CD ROM?

I download the Windows ME OEM one instead of Custom thing on www.BootDisk.Com and download it into the C:Drive then put a floppy disk in the computer and click on the file and it should download onto the floppy disk right? Then I insert it into my computer turn it on and it should take me to the DOS prompt and I type SCANREG /RESTORE and then reboot and it should work? And I don't understand about the recent backup? Will there be one on there that was automatically made? And if there isn't one what then?
