Hi folks,
I really could use some help here - I'm WAY out of my depth !!
I'm trying to upgrade to AOL broadband. I've run the set-up disc(2 different versions) and tried 2 different modems supplied by AOL and cannot get the computer to communicate with the modem.
I'm connecting it via the supplied ethernet cable and the green light on the ethernet port comes on when I plug it in.
The ethernet light on the modem lights up when it's connected but the modem is not detected.
Any help would be appreciated.

Dougie

Here's my advice: Get rid of AOL. Don't waste your valuable time or money.

Life's more painless for the brainless.

Agreed. It's probably not a modem problem or a problem with your computer.

But troubleshooting AOL is pointless, especially with older versions of Windows and newer versions of AOL.

It might be fixable but why waste your time. There are better options.

Yeah thanks folks - I know it's very easy to
tear into AOL but surely the problem is in the actual computer ?
Even without the AOL software installed , surely the system should recognise the fact that the modem has been plugged in ?
I've a funny feeling that something to do with the ethernet port has been disabled/deleted/corrupted !!
I've tried to add both a BT modem and a Netgear one and windows cant find it.

!! indeed

My experience with broadband modems (exclusive of AO Hell) is that they work without the need for extensive setting up - provided the NIC is in good order and has the proper network protocols installed

I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. I simply suspect that if Microsoft ever met up with the devil, it wouldn't need an interpreter.
