System restore has never worked for me since I bought my Compaq last fall. Sometimes I can set restore points; other times I can't, but attempting to restore always causes the computer to freeze immediately. After I back out and re-boot, I get an error message that says the program cannot restore to the chosen date, try picking another one.

I have been through the basic troubleshooting with Compaq customer support a couple of times. At this point they are scratching their heads and suggesting that perhaps restoring to factory settings would help. I hate to go through that, especially since we don't know if it would help.

I have tried disabling just about everything else while trying to run system restore, and have also tried to run it in safe mode. Nothing works to date.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

System restore rarely works and is of little
practical use anyhow . You are better of
disabling it and using the reclaimed disk
space for a more fruitful purpose .

Something most people are not aware of.....if you disable System Restore......it also disables the feature that prevents critical system files and dll's from being overwritten. I have system restore set to the minimum setting, thus leaving my system files protected from sloppy programers or programs that overwrite newer files with there own.

What's so hard about setting yer computer back to it's factory settings? I could understand if you were a person who has their computer tweaked for playing games and don't want to lose yer custom settings, but otherwise a good ole format and reinstall should only take a couple hours, and you only want to get back to the factory settings.

sysrestore really sucks... i guess the best way to get rid of it is using a tool by definition-software...

it can be downloaded from http://www.definition-software.com/ on my ME it worked fine so far... but I didn't know of that dll stuff mentioned by undo in message 2...

Good luck :-)
