I want to enable system restore. I right click "my computer"/properties/performance/file system/troubleshooting/. I uncheck "disable system restore" and then apply. I reboot when prompted for the changes to take effect, but when i go back there the "disable system restore" box is still checked. Why is this happening? Thanks for your help!

Have you disabled *statemgr in msconfig?... this may be a problem. The steps you have followed are the same as those below which I have sent to a number of "posts" and all have been successful.
Here's what to do: 1.) Go into "Control Panel" 2.) Select the "System" Icon 3.) Select the "Performance" tab 4.) Select the "File System" button 5.) Select the "Troubleshooting" tab 6.) Select the bottom radio button.. "Disable System Restore"
The System will ask you to restart... do so and your Restore information will disappear and Restore will be inactive. When you want to use it again carry out steps 1 to 5 and deselect the "Disable" button. Now select the "Hard-Disk" tab (the first one) and on the "System Restore" slider set whatever capacity on your drive that you want Restore to use.
Regards,
Ewen.

Ewan,
I did have *statemgr disabled from msconfig. As soon as I enabled it and rebooted, system restore was also enabled. Problem solved! Thanks a lot for your help. I appreciate it very much. Take care!
