Something happened to my computer about a week ago. The symptoms are:
1) Windows Media Player won't work, it won't play WMA file, MP3 files, or any video files. It says it is looking for the proper CODEC, but then says it can't find it and quites.
2) System Restore won't work, I've tried a dozen different restore points, but it keeps saying Resolution Unsuccessful. I was hoping restore would fix problem #1
3) I noted too that my computer at the same time quit setting daily system restore points.
The only major thing I've done to my computer recently was to install and run Norton Antivirus, at about the time this stuff started happening. (could be related?)
I've also recently run Spybot and Disk Defragmenter.
I installed the Norton because Spybot kept saying I had Virtumonde, but it couldn't get rid of it.
Also my computer has gotten kind of slow. My hard drive has 42 Gb of memory, there is 10 free Gb right now.
Can you help me?

Uninstall Norton completely& I bet everything will work fine again. Norton doesn't like aLot of programs and drivers and in return causes conflicts and does strange things to your computer, also as you stated it all started when you installed Norton.

Norton sucks anyway. Try AVG Free 8.0

Thanks for the help.
I removed Norton Anti Virus. My Windows Media Player function was restored. I can play all the music & video files again.
But, System Restore still doesn't work. AND
it wiped out my internet explorer and outlook express. When I click upon either I'm taken to an MSN internet start up window, the same one as when I unboxed my computer in 2000 and started it for the first time. Can anyone help me?

IMO, the System Restore in WinME should not be relied upon...consider disabling it altogether.

"Try AVG Free 8.0"
I was getting pop-ups in XP that I needed to upgrade to AVG 8.0 because support for AVG Free 7.x runs out at the end of May, but I wasn't getting the same in 98SE. Both presently have AVG free 7.x on them.
I checked that out yesterday.
According to it's System Requirements, Windows 2000 and previous are not supported by AVG version 8.x .
Any other free anti-virus programs to suggest that work with ME?
......"System Restore won't work"
According to your info, it's incorrect for you to say that.
It sounds like your System Restore works fine but the problem is the restore points have been of no help.
...."...it wiped out my internet explorer and outlook express...."
We need specific details.
........Check your hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostics.
See the latter part of response 1 in this:

Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm...If you don't have a floppy drive, you can get a CD image diagnostic utility from most hard drive manufacturer's web sites, but obviously you would need to make a burned CD, preferably a CD-R for best compatibilty, on another computer if you need to.
......You could try doing an "overtop" Setup using a regular Windows ME CD to possibly repair Windows - at least, this is an option with 98SE, 98, and 95 - I'm assuming it applies to ME too, but I don't have a ME CD.
(However, if it does apply you will probably lose all your present restore points in System Restore)Insert the ME CD in a drive.
Either....
- Boot with a ME Startup Disk floppy.
If you don't have one you can get one from the web.
Let the floppy load support for a CD drive, the default.
- OR - boot using the ME CD, but that only works if the ME CD is bootable (an Upgrade CD may not be). When the files have finished loading from the floppy or the CD, type: setup (press Enter).
Install Windows in the SAME location it is already in - that's C:\Windows by default, but when you run Setup an additional time, Setup may make the default location something else - if it doesn't say C:\Windows, change it to C:\Windows.
If you install it in the SAME directory, you will not lose any of the data presently on the drive (hence the term "overtop" Setup, although you will probably lose all your present restore points in System Restore)
, and if there are any essential files found to be missing or corrupted that are on the Windows CD, they will be replaced.
However, doing that can only fix problems caused by files on the original CD, and it cannot fix all problems. If the situation is different for ME, and you get a warning that you will lose all the data or similar, then don't continue running Setup - quit at that point.
.....If you still have the original Dell software installation on this computer, you may be able to repair Windows using a program supplied by Dell in the Programs list, without having to run Setup or having to reload your system from scratch, but I don't use brand name systems so I am not familiar with that. The Dell site, and maybe your User manual, probably has info about that.

You can try AVAST or ClamWin:

Thanks Jam.
I was using Protector Plus for years up until about 9 months ago, ever since the anti-virus in Norton System Works 2003 could no longer be updated. It's fairly good and cheap to renew, but the latest version interferes greatly with my Eudora email program, and it's full scans are really slow on my Win 98SE computer, so I switched to using AVG 7.x instead on that computer.

Keyboard not detected. Hit F1 to Continue. BREAKFAST.SYS HALTED Cerial port not Responding!!

I have to agree that Norton does interfer with the system restore in WinMe ! I found with my PC that still has WinMe running on it that if I try and restore to a restore point in which new virus definitions where installed on the PC after that date ,it would restore my PC ,however then I would have a problem with Norton Anti Virus giving me a "cannot locate virus definition scanning data base for Norton Anti-Virus" . On my new PC running WinXP MCE 2005 ,everytime i have tried a system restore it will say "unable to restore you computer to that date" Knowing I cannot rely on the system rstore I purchased a externial H.D. and back up My Documents and Settings every other day or so and aprx once monthly I do a full system back to the 320G.B. externial H.D. ! THe full system backup is about 10 G.B.'s
Good Luck Nick
