How do I do a system restore, but not without erasing the whole c drive. Im not sure if there is such a thing. All I need is the settings of how I bought it back. Like rundll and everything because it was accidently deleted. So if theres a non destructive way of restoring, but not erasing the whole c drive, then please let me know. Tell me how to do it too if you can. Thankyou
also I have a WINDOWS ME 98. And its an emachines computer.
Thanks :)

destiny,
I think you need to explain what is happening. Is the computer starting up ok, in normal, and/or safe mode?
"All I need is the settings of how I bought it back. Like rundll and everything because it was accidently deleted."
What exactly, was deleted?
Do you have a startup disk (EBD)?"also I have a WINDOWS ME 98."
Are you saying, you had Win98 installed, and installed WinME over it, as an upgrade?
Let us know, thanks.

System Restore
Go to Start > Run > type in MSCONFIG and press ENTER. Go to "Launch System Restore" and set it to the day before you deleted the .dll files.
Make sure System Restore is set to enabled in Control Panel > System > Performance > File System > Troubleshooting Tab

You can locate the CAB file WIN_17.CAB in the C:\Windows\Options\Install folder and drag and drop a copy of RUNDLL.exe and RUNDLL32.exe from it to the C:\Windows folder using My Computer or Explorer. Most of the install files are somewhere in the CAB files.
Or you can use the EXTRACT function in MSCONFIG program.
Or you can go to C:\Windows\Options\Install folder and run SETUP which will rebuild your Windows ME system, and leave your data a applications like they were.

Ok, for the first person who commented...
The computer IS starting up normally. Its not in safe mode or anything. What happen is one day I was going through alot of my files because I had a virus. I was deleting things that didnt belong. Then I accidently deleted some rundll.exe or rundll32.exe or both.
The only problem Im having now is that I cant open up my control panel or modify my desktop. Every time I try to do this the message...
"Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\rundll32.exe'. You may have typed the name incorrectly in the Run dialog, or another open program cannot find a system file. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click search" pops up.
My computers is a Windows ME. Buts its like a 98. I bought it this way. Im not sure if I have a start up disk. Would it be a floppy or a cd? I'll check to see what I have.K FOR THE SECOND PERSON WHO COMMENTED... I'll try and do that MSCONFIG in the run, but I cant enable system restore because I cant open my control panel. What would happen if its not enabled? Should I still do it?
AND FOR THE 3RD PERSON... I went to that folder and the only thing that is in it is CCPORT.SYS.
You said.. "Or you can go to C:\Windows\Options\Install folder and run SETUP which will rebuild your Windows ME system, and leave your data a applications like they were." ... how would I run SETUP? Is there spose to be a file in that folder that would run setup? Let me know
Thanks for all your help :D Im not really good at this type of stuff. So I can use all the help I can get.

Hi Destiny..I'm surprised that nobody mentioned trying your basic "System Restore"-(the old fashioned way, lol.)Click on Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.Just follow the instructions there Destiny-and if for some reason it fails-you just need to update your 'system restore',at "Microsoft Windows Update".(Just type that into your browser-without the quotes.)after updating your restore-reboot,then go back to system restore, run it & it'll work fine. You really ought to create a "restore point"-so that you'll know exactly where you want to restore it from next time...it'll show you how there.Well, good luck-hope ya get it fixed.

Birgitta .... I tryed system restore and it didnt work. I tryed to restore it to many different dates, but each time, it said that it could not be restored.
I dont know what else to do. I cant get into my control panel or view my images or anything

You can re-install windows using the cabinet files.
Start, click Run,
type c:\windows\options\cabs\setup.exe & press enter,
Windows will begin to reinstall,
Takes about 1/2 hour & all your applications will remain intact,
(You Won't lose any of your programs, files, data, etc.)
no need for a disk. The above may need to be altered if the path to your cab files is different.
