My system resources are very low, 20-25%.I have a HP Pavilion 7940, 1.0ghz with 256mb RAM with mcafee AV and zone alarm for firewall. Here is what is in the config startup tab: taskbar display controls, yahoo! Pager, msmsgs, scan registery, task monitor, pc health, system tray, load power profile, hp sys drv, delay, motive monitor, adaptec direct cd, alogserv, vswin32exe, hpaio_print folder mgr, loadqm, new.net.startup, tkbellexe, mm tray, load power profile, scheduling agent, ssdpsrv, *statemgr, keyboard manager, mcafee virus scan service, mcafee image, true vector, zone alarm, Microsoft office startup, description of shortcut, hpaiodevice.
What items can I uncheck?
On the config general tab selective startup everything is checked. Can I uncheck that and check normal start?

http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm
This lists all the progs and what they do.
After you have unchecked things, I think you get the option to clean up the unchecked boxes. I did not go for that option incase I wanted to add something back to start up.
Check your resources afterwards and see if it's at an acceptable level. (over 60%??).
If not you may wish to do a spyware scan...
a good free one is ADAWARE from....
www.lavasoft.nu
also SPYBOT Search and Destroy, though I know nothing of this last one.

After reconfiguring my system in msconfig and removing unnessary items that I can activate on a as need basis , my system now boots up at 94% user resources free ! I would follow the other advise and go to the site that tells you what each startup item is for . I know you must leave system tray and some othe Windows process items enabled .Most of the software you installed that added things to your startup you can remove . Good Luck ,Nick
