After I exit Internet Explorer, my computer hangs for about thirty seconds when I try any programs or shutting down. I have Windows Me operating system and a Dell Dimension. Any ideas?

I experience the same thing, but it only seems to happen when visiting certain websites.
Here are some of the reasons I have been told why this happens, I don't believe any of them:

Memory problem
Zone Alarm tvdebug.log takes forever to write to its file
Zone Alarm itself is the cause
McAfee Online Viruscan causing the problem
A glitch in IE 6 SP1

I shutdown Zone Alarm and McAfee and the problem still was there. I could not get anything to open up, not even folders on my desktop for about 30 seconds or so. All I would see is the "wait" cursor...

If you find out what the problem is and there is a fix, please post it..

If it is really a glitch in IE6 SP1, I guess I will have to live with it..

I downloaded that update back in April of 2004 (KB831167). So evidently something else is amiss, but thanks for the info..

Thank you.
But I've also rid myself of Zonealarm and McAfee, and also downloaded the update without success as well. Only one other note,
the problem only exists while in my own "user preferences." Other users have no problem. Any more ideas?

I am not sure what you mean by "the problem only exists while in my own "user preferences." Other users have no problem." I will try and duplicate the scenario and see if I get the same symptoms...

Yup, I run McAfee and Zone Alarm, even with both turned off, same wait after closing IE 6, but again, only happens when exiting certan sites...

Yes, I've used Spybot, Adaware, and Norton.
Nothing helps this particular problem.
Thanks for the idea.
Could it be a memory issue, or is the system
searching for a missing path?
