While ridding his computer of a virus, my friend lost many of his system files, and things just aren't working as well. Is there a way to get these back without reformatting?

Run repair console and restore system files. Or run winnt32 which will "upgrade" your installation but really keeping it the same except for a file refresh.

You can try reinstalling WinMe over itself ,this will replace the missing files without effecting his current setup ! Do a nodistuctive windows m.e reinstall with out losing data go to safe mode and then c:windows\options\cabs\setup.exe double click setup and windows will start reinstalling on top of its self ! Good Luck Nick
