Scandisk tells me there are system errors which it can't fix but I don't get error messages or blue screens. Is my HD on the way out? I don't have much space left on it. Could this be a factor?

Are your errors Bad sectors?
If so , Yes you should back up your files and plan on getting a new hard drive soon!
Have you tried booting into safe mode by tapping the F8 key at boot up then run scan disc? Or run scandisc in dos mode

Don't know if they're bad sectors as it freezes when I do a thorough scandisk - guess i'll have to do it in safe mode ( it scares me !). Standard scandisk says they're errors on the System file - are they lethal if they're not bad sectors or just fairly normal?
Thanks for your help.

When you run scandisc in safe mode , make sure you have fix errors checked
If you have no bad sectors you should be able to repair what is needed

In safe mode I got a message saying it found errors, the disk is badly damaged and i may start to lose data & said to do a thorough test but when I did that, it said it found errors which it would sort later but when it resumed scanning the same message came up so I can't get to do a test. I'm assuming the disk is on the way out, if so - can I plug in another hard drive I have as a secondary one & transfer files from the old one to the new one? If so - anything I need to do to ensure both hard drives work?
Thanks for your help
