Hey everyone -

When I start up my system, it gets me to a blank desktop and then freezes. If I hit Alt-Ctrl-Del and then end the task known as "WI8ec", the system loads my desktop properly. Why is everything getting hung up at that point? Is there anything I can do about it? Thank you.

Have you opened the system configuration utility and looked at the list of items enabled to load at startup ? If the answer is no ,then go to the start button , run and type msconfig . When the utility opens click on the startup tab ,and look for the offending item, WI8ec and remove the check mark from the box, and restart your PC. This will stop this app from loading at startup. I would also go to this site and see if its listed among startup items and if its needed or not (I dont think so )http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
If it not listed in msconfig ,you may also need to scan your system for a virus, and or spyware etc.
Good Luck Nick

I don't know what WI8ec is but....
Something is loading at 'start up' which may give a clue.

To find out what is loading at start up....

START - RUN - type MSCONFIG - OK - START UP.
Post back with a list of what you can see.
I have Win ME and may be able to tell you what is not supposed to be there (and perhaps what it is??).

Hi Nick & Rebecca.
You may also check for WI8ec (or the offending msconfig entry) at....

Hey everyone, thanks for the prompt response! I actually tried msconfig already and have deselected everything but the essential items. Unfortunatley, there is no sign of WI8ec on there ... have any other suggestions? Thanks!

I'd do a couple of online virus scans and an Adaware and a Spybot if I were you.

Hey Viking - I tried an Adaware scan and some stuff came up ... I got rid of all that but the WI8ec problem is still there. Is this just buried some place I'm not looking? Thanks!

How about trying a System Restore to a point in time prior to when this problem first occurred.

Not sure yet, it could be part of something else. It's hard if you can't get any more information out and google doesn't throw any indicators up -- choose an online virus scan and see if anything shows up and post back.

Disable system restore before scanning.

START - RUN - type MSCONFIG - OK - START UP.

The entry that you are looking for will not be WI8ec but it will be loading WI8ec.

Post back with a list of what you can see.
I/we will be able to tell you what is not supposed to be there and this may give a clue as to what it is.
