Hi! I wonder if any of you guys encountered this problem before. Whenever my system goes into sleep mode ( i.e. monitor sleep and harddisk sleep under window's power saving ), about an hour or so later when i try to 'wake' it up, it just refuses to wake up. i.e.hang or forever sleep. I have no choice but to reset. What's causing this problem and how do i rectify it?

please advise!
ThanKS!

hello
unless you got a lap top get rid of it.
you can uncheck it in your systems bios settings.to get ther on start up you do one of the following on start up
depending on what type of computer you have.
1.way holdt f8 key down on start up.
2nd way, hold f2 key down on start up
3rd way keep hitting delete key on start up.
mine uses f2 and useing delete stops computer starting.where as the other two ways work on compaqs and many other types.
care full of what you do in bios.
have a nice day

What kind of computer do you have?

System Specs? Video, sound, modem, nic, etc...

Did this just start or has it always done this?

Everything from hardware to installed programs can affect Power Management. Take a look on the root of your c:\ drive for a file called:

Nohiber.txt

It will be a hidden file... so you will need to unhide it before looking. To do this:

Double click on My Computer.
At the top... click on Tools>>Folder Options.
Go to the View Tab.
Put a dot in Show hidden files.
Uncheck the box labeled Hide Protected Operating System Files.
Say Yes to the little warning.
Click apply>>ok.

Now search for nohiber.txt
If you find it, open it in notepad. It may tell you why you cannot wake up.

If that does not work, there are other programs that can analize your computer to tell you what is causing the fault in power management, but they are a pain in the *ss to use. You need to think about how much you really want to use standby.

If it is something you want to persue... have a look at this Microsoft Knowledgebase article for a download of a utility that will analize standby:

Description of the Power Management Troubleshooter Tool (Q185949)

newgrl, I have yet to come across the "NOHIBER.TXT" file being hidden. The times I have seen it on different computers it's in "C:\WINDOWS" and not hidden. Could you explain to me why this is, also, does marking "Show hidden files" and unchecking "Hide Protected Operating System Files" have any bad effects while online? Just wondering.

Thank You

You are right I'll Try. Nohiber.txt is in c:\windows and is not hidden. I believe I was thinking of Setuplog.txt... which is marked as a hidden system file and must be "unhid" before you can take a look at it.

As far as unhiding files and being on the internet goes... If you have broadband and an always on connection, and do not have a firewall, then yes. I could see there being some security issues.

But, for most folks, no. I don't think this setting has any ill effects. The files are hidden to protect the operating system from YOU, not the outside world. I still haven't figured out why file extensions are hidden from the home user. Seems like it would save a lot of hassles if folks became familiar with them.

Thanks Again newgrl.
Glad to see, I'm not the only one that has a brain f*rt once awhile :)
The reason for the questions on folders and files. Is people have asked me why at the time when they unhide these things while online they see a lot of internet activity right when they say [OK] and [Apply]. My simple answer was don't do this while online. Don't know if it was a right answer or not but, it was the answer I thought was right.
