I have just recently purchased a new computer that came with ME pre-loaded. I do like the way ME runs but some of the programmes i use are not ME compatible.
I have alot of programmes that came pre-loaded and i dont want to loose them by doing a format.
When i try to install win98 it tells me "another OS is present and setup will be aborted", or something along those lines.
Is there a way of installing win98 without formating, or could someone walk me threw setting win98 alongside ME and haveing an option on bootup which OS loads up.
I have a fair amount of knowledge in computers but if possible treat me as someone who doesn't know anything so i dont get lost.
Thx in advance

No, you *don't* have to reformat and lose all installed progs, but any you have will need to be reinstalled (have you the disks?) into win98. Win ME just doesn't like people to meddle with system files, but you can run both it and Win 98 on the same system if you want to, but the original Win95/98 boot menu will not work with ME. Email me if you want more details.
You can also try booting from a Win98 floppy disk, deleting boot-up files and renaming Win.com to something else before installing Windows 98 to the same directory as ME - has anyone tried that yet?

Have Compaq model 740. Came with QuickCam and CD. Tried 3 times to install w/out camera connected, and the computer locked up and did not install device. Compaq Technition said I should ask for a new CD. Current CD is Version 1.5.2. This computer has windows 98.5 for mgt. system. Can you help me?? Send a new CD or??

there is a file in Windows ME that allows you to run certain things in a different windows version. You just have to check what program you want to run with which window version. you can find this in the help index.

MKCOMPAT.EXE is the file mentioned above, and can sometimes fool programs into working, so maybe it's worth a try
